Hamster Age in Human Years: Hamster Age Calculator & Life Stages

There's no sourced way to turn hamster age in human years into one number, so this calculator shows what we can say: your hamster's life stage, a comparable human stage and how far through a typical lifespan it is. Or switch modes to estimate how old your hamster is from its eyes, size, coat, activity and weight.

Weeks, months or years — weeks work best for babies.
Quick answer

No vet or scientific source gives a hamster-to-human-years formula, so we don't invent one. Instead: a hamster is a baby to 3 weeks, a juvenile to 8 weeks, an adult to about 14 months, then middle-aged, and a senior from 18 months (Syrian, Russian dwarf), 2 years (Chinese) or 3 years (Roborovski). A 1-year-old Syrian has lived about 44% of a typical life.

General information only. Every hamster is different. For any health worry, see an exotic-animal vet. We give no medication or dosing advice.

Hamster age in human years

People often want a hamster's hamster age in human years — a single number, like "a 1-year-old hamster is 30". We looked for one in veterinary manuals, welfare guidance and the scientific literature, and found none with any evidence behind it. Charts online use different rules (some say one hamster month equals three or more human years) and none cites a study. So this hamster age calculator doesn't invent a number. Instead it does two things that are well supported: it shows your hamster's life stage, and how far through a typical lifespan it is.

Life stages travel well between species because they're biological events: birth, eyes opening, weaning, puberty, the end of growth, falling fertility and old age. A hamster that has just been weaned is at a stage comparable to a young child; one that has just reached puberty is like a young teenager; one whose fertility is falling is in something like middle age. The calculator names that comparable human stage and gives the percentage of a typical lifespan — for example, a 6-month-old Syrian is an adult about 22% through an average 2.3-year life. If you want hamster years to human years as a rough feel, that percentage is the honest version: a 1-year-old Syrian has lived about 44% of its life.

Why a hamster year isn't "X human years"

Hamsters race through their early life and then age steadily. A Syrian is weaned at 3 weeks and mature at 6–8 weeks (Miedel & Hankenson 2015); a human takes over a decade to reach puberty. Any fixed multiplier gets either the start or the end wrong. Even for rats and mice, where researchers have tried, the "rodent days per human year" ratio changes enormously from one life phase to the next. For hamsters, no one has published such a study.

Syrian hamster age chart

This Syrian hamster age chart shows the life stage, the share of a typical lifespan (Merck's 18–36 months, average 2.3 years) and the comparable human life stage for common ages. It's also the chart for golden and long-haired ("teddy bear") Syrians.

Notice how fast the first two months go: by 8 weeks a Syrian is an adult, though it has used under 7% of its life. Fertility falls from about 14 months, and the calculator counts Syrians as senior from 18 months, where Merck's typical range begins. Past 3 years, a Syrian is beyond the typical range.

Dwarf hamster age chart

Dwarf hamsters reach adulthood at about the same speed as Syrians but differ in how long they live. Russian dwarfs (Winter White and Campbell's) typically live 18–24 months and Roborovskis 36–48 months (Merck), so the same age means different things.

Each cell shows the life stage and the share of a typical lifespan. Chinese hamsters (24–36 months) aren't true dwarfs; choose "Chinese hamster" in the calculator.

A 1-year-old Russian dwarf has used more than half of a typical life; a 1-year-old Roborovski under a third. That's why the calculator asks for the type first. For lifespan detail, see the Russian dwarf and Roborovski pages.

Hamster lifecycle: baby, juvenile, adult, senior

The hamster lifecycle has six stages in our tools. The ages are the same for every type, except senior, which starts at the lower end of each type's typical lifespan.

Hamster life stages and comparable human stages
StageAgeComparable human stageWhat happens
Newborn pupBirth – 2 weeksA newborn babyPups are born hairless, with eyes and ears closed, weighing 2–3 g (Syrian; Miedel & Hankenson). The ears open at 4–5 days.
Baby (eyes open, nursing)2 – 3 weeksAn infant that is still nursingThe eyes open at 14–16 days in Syrians and 10–14 days in Chinese hamsters (Miedel & Hankenson); Roborovski pups are fully furred with eyes open by day 14 (ADW). Pups start nibbling solid food but still nurse.
Juvenile (weaned)3 – 8 weeksA child growing into a teenagerWeaned at about 21 days (Merck: 21–28). Puberty comes fast — Merck gives 4–7 weeks — so siblings must be separated, and Syrians must then live alone. Wet tail is most dangerous at this age.
Adult8 weeks – 14 monthsA young adult in its primeFull grown: Syrian males are mature at about 6–8 weeks and 85–110 g, females at 8–12 weeks (Miedel & Hankenson). Merck says hamsters breed best from about 10 weeks to 15 months.
Middle-aged14 months – seniorMiddle ageFertility falls from about 14 months (Miedel & Hankenson). Age-related lens changes (cataracts) usually appear after about a year (PetMD), and kidney cysts and amyloidosis become common in hamsters over a year old.
SeniorSyrian & Russian dwarf 18 months +; Chinese 2 years +; Roborovski 3 years +Older ageWeight loss, a rough coat and slowing down are common (Merck; Miedel & Hankenson). Heart disease and atrial thrombosis are common in aged Syrians, and tumours (lymphoma most often) become more likely.

Baby hamster age: the first three weeks

A newborn Syrian weighs only 2–3 g, is hairless, and has closed eyes and ears. The ears open at 4–5 days, the eyes at 14–16 days, and pups are weaned at about 21 days, weighing 35–40 g (Miedel & Hankenson 2015). Chinese hamster pups open their eyes a little earlier, at 10–14 days. Working out a baby hamster age is therefore easier than an adult's: eyes, fur and size change week by week. Leave the nest alone, and if you find a pup on its own, call an exotic-animal vet.

When is a hamster fully grown?

When is a hamster fully grown? Syrian males are sexually mature at 6–8 weeks and about 85–110 g, and females at 8–12 weeks and 90–100 g (Miedel & Hankenson), with adults weighing about 110–140 g (Merck). Merck's pet rodent table gives puberty at 4–7 weeks, which is why litters must be split by sex early. Most hamsters are adult-sized by about two months, although they may fill out a little more over the next few weeks.

How do I know how old my hamster is?

How do I know how old my hamster is if no one told me? For babies, quite accurately; for adults, only roughly. Switch the calculator to "How old is my hamster?" and pick the signs you can see. Each sign has an age window from published milestones, and the calculator combines them. When signs disagree, it keeps the most reliable (eyes first, then size and weight) and tells you.

How to tell a hamster's age: signs and what they mean
SignSuggestsWhy
Eyes closedUnder about 2 weeksEyes open at 14–16 days in Syrians, 10–14 in Chinese hamsters, by day 14 in Roborovskis
Furry baby still nursingUnder about 4 weeksWeaning at about 21 days, normally 21–28 (Merck; Miedel & Hankenson)
Half-grown, independentAbout 3–8 weeksSyrians weigh 35–40 g at weaning and are mature at 6–8 weeks (Miedel & Hankenson)
Adult-sizedOver about 6 weeksAfter that, size can't separate a 3-month-old from a 1-year-old
Cloudy eyesUsually over 1 yearAge-related cataracts usually appear after about a year (PetMD); in young dwarfs, see a vet
Rough coat, slowing down, weight lossOften older — or illCommon in old Syrians but also signs of disease (Merck; Miedel & Hankenson)

The limits matter. Once a hamster is adult-sized — from about six weeks — appearance can't tell a 3-month-old from a 14-month-old, and even a vet can only judge general condition. Signs that look like old age (a rough coat, slowing down, weight loss) are also signs of illness, so an exotic-vet check is better than a guess. If you buy from a shop, ask for the date of birth or at least the date the litter arrived; most hamsters are sold young, so a new pet is usually only a few weeks to a few months old.

How old is my hamster? Quick rules

  • Eyes closed: under about two weeks — a nest baby.
  • Furry and still nursing: under about four weeks.
  • Small, independent, quick: about 3–8 weeks.
  • Adult-sized, glossy coat: an adult — exact age unknown.
  • Cloudy eyes or slowing down: often over a year, or unwell.

How this hamster age calculator works

Share of lifespan = age ÷ type's average lifespan × 100 · life stage from published milestone ages · comparable human stage = the human stage with the same biological events

Age in human terms: choose a type and an age in weeks, months or years. The calculator finds the stage (newborn under 2 weeks, baby to 3 weeks, juvenile to 8 weeks, adult to 14 months, middle-aged to the start of the type's typical range, then senior) and the share of the type's average lifespan from Merck's figures. It names the comparable human stage but deliberately gives no "human years" number, because no credible conversion exists. A 4-week-old Syrian is a juvenile (3% through), a 1-year-old an adult (44%), and an 18-month-old a senior (66%).

How old is my hamster? Each sign you choose adds an age window; the calculator finds the overlap, drops signs that conflict with more reliable ones, and rates confidence high (a window of three weeks or less), medium (a closed window) or low (open-ended, such as "adult"). The same stage ages are used in all our hamster tools, including the hamster lifespan calculator, so the results always agree. For record ages, see the oldest hamster page.

Frequently asked questions

How old is my hamster in human years?

No credible conversion exists, so we show a comparable human life stage and the share of a typical lifespan instead. A 1-year-old Syrian is an adult about 44% through an average life.

Is 1 hamster year equal to 25 or 30 human years?

There's no evidence for any fixed number. Charts online use different multipliers and none cites a study, because hamsters develop very fast early on and then age steadily.

How do I know how old my hamster is?

Babies can be aged from their eyes, fur and size. Adult-sized hamsters (over about 6 weeks) can only be described as adults; cloudy eyes or slowing down suggest an older hamster — or illness.

When is a hamster fully grown?

At about 6–8 weeks for Syrian males and 8–12 weeks for females (Miedel & Hankenson 2015). Adult Syrians weigh about 110–140 g (Merck).

When do baby hamsters open their eyes?

At 14–16 days in Syrians, 10–14 days in Chinese hamsters and by day 14 in Roborovskis (Miedel & Hankenson 2015; ADW).

When are baby hamsters weaned?

At about 21 days, normally 21–28 (Merck). Pups should stay with their mother until at least 19 days old.

At what age is a hamster a senior?

From the start of its type's typical range: 18 months for Syrians and Russian dwarfs, 2 years for Chinese hamsters and 3 years for Roborovskis.

How old are hamsters in pet shops?

Usually young — a few weeks to a few months. Ask the shop for the birth date or the date the litter arrived.

What are the stages of a hamster's life?

Newborn (to 2 weeks), baby (to 3 weeks), juvenile (to 8 weeks), adult (to about 14 months), middle-aged, and senior.

Can a vet tell how old my hamster is?

Only roughly. A vet can tell a baby from an adult and spot signs of age-related disease, but can't date an adult hamster precisely.

What is a hamster's age in human years at 2?

There's no reliable number. A 2-year-old Syrian is a senior that has used about 89% of an average 2.25-year life; a 2-year-old Roborovski is middle-aged at about 57%.
