Pet hedgehogs typically live 4–6 years (Merck Veterinary Manual, VCA), and some reach 8–10 (VCA); the longest recorded in captivity is 11.4 years (AnAge). The biggest single factor is disease, above all cancer: Merck says tumours are most often found after age 3 and over 80% are malignant, so yearly exotic-vet checks matter.
General information only. Hedgehogs hide illness well. For a pet, see an exotic-animal vet; for a wild hedgehog in trouble, call a local hedgehog rescue. We give no medication or dosing advice.
How long do hedgehogs live?
The typical hedgehog lifespan for a pet African pygmy hedgehog is 4–6 years. That is the range given by both the Merck Veterinary Manual and VCA Animal Hospitals, and it's the figure this calculator uses. VCA adds that "some live for eight to ten years", which is the realistic top end for a well-kept pet. So if you're asking "how long do hedgehogs live for?", the short answer is about five years, with a good chance of six and an outside chance of ten.
That makes the hedgehog a short-lived pet. Merck describes its lifespan as "short", and it is: a hedgehog lives about as long as a guinea pig at the low end, and far less than a rabbit or chinchilla. People also phrase the question as "how long to hedgehogs live", "hedgehog how long do they live" or "how old do hedgehogs live" — the answer is the same, because nearly every pet hedgehog in Europe and North America is the same animal, the African pygmy hedgehog.
Hedgehog life expectancy at a glance
- Typical pet lifespan: 4–6 years (Merck, VCA). Average used by the calculator: 5 years.
- Upper range: 8–10 years for some pets (VCA).
- Longest recorded in captivity: 11.4 years (AnAge database). The Royal Veterinary College mentions 10 years recorded.
- Biggest single factor: disease, above all cancer. Merck says tumours are most often found in hedgehogs over 3 and more than 80% of them are malignant.
The hedgehog life expectancy you can hope for depends on care, genetics and luck. A hedgehog that is kept warm, fed a measured diet, exercised and checked by an exotic vet once a year has the best chance of reaching the top of the range. The calculator above shows how much of a typical 4–6 year life your hedgehog has used, and roughly how many years are left on average.
How long do hedgehogs live as pets?
Most sources put the pet hedgehog lifespan between 4 and 6 years, but they don't all agree. The table below lists every figure we found from a veterinary source, so you can see the spread for yourself.
| Source | Lifespan | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Merck Veterinary Manual | 4–6 years on average | Calls it a "short lifespan" |
| VCA Animal Hospitals | about 4–6 years | "some live for 8 to 10 years" |
| Royal Veterinary College (UK) | 3–5 years on average | 10 recorded in captivity |
| University of Florida vet hospital | about 6 years or more | "with proper care" |
| PetMD (vet-reviewed) | 8–10 years on average | Highest average we found; an outlier among vet sources |
| International Hedgehog Association survey (2005) | 38.5 months (about 3.2 years) average | As reported by a breeder blog; we couldn't see the survey |
| AnAge longevity database | 11.4 years maximum | Zoo and captive records (Weigl 2005) |
Why the spread? The lower figures (RVC 3–5, Merck and VCA 4–6) describe the average pet, including the many hedgehogs that die early from tumours, Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome or obesity-related disease. The higher figures (UF "6 or more", PetMD 8–10) describe what's possible with very good care. So how long do hedgehogs live as a pet in a typical home? Five years is a fair middle estimate, and that is the average the calculator uses for "% of lifespan used".
How long do pet hedgehogs live compared with what owners expect?
Many owners are surprised by how short the lifespan of hedgehogs as pets is. A breeder blog reports a 2005 International Hedgehog Association survey that found an average of 38.5 months, a little over three years. We couldn't see that survey ourselves, so treat it as a reported figure, but it fits the RVC's 3–5 years. It means the lifespan of a pet hedgehog in an average home may fall short of the 4–6 years that vets describe as typical.
However you phrase it — the lifespan of hedgehog pet owners can expect, or the lifespan of pet hedgehog breeds sold as "mini" or "pygmy" — the answer is the same 4–6 years. Put simply, the hedgehog pet lifespan is a short commitment compared with most small mammals, so it pays to know the main health risks from day one. The section on what shortens a pet hedgehog's life explains them.
Hedgehog lifespan in captivity vs the wild
The hedgehog lifespan in captivity is longer than in the wild for most hedgehogs, because pets don't face roads, predators or a hard winter. But the comparison is tricky: pet hedgehogs and the hedgehogs in European gardens are different species, and the wild hedgehogs most people know actually have the longer maximum lifespan.
| Hedgehog | Average lifespan | Upper end |
|---|---|---|
| Pet / captive African pygmy hedgehog | 4–6 years on average | Some 8–10 (VCA); 11.4 years recorded (AnAge) |
| Wild European hedgehog | about 2 years on average | Only a small percentage reach five (PTES); oldest documented 16 |
| Wild four-toed hedgehog (Africa) | No reliable figure found | PetMD gives 3–4 years for wild hedgehogs in general |
So how long do hedgehogs live in captivity? About 4–6 years for a pet African pygmy hedgehog, which is roughly double the average wild European hedgehog's life of about 2 years (PTES). The wild average is low because so many young hedgehogs die before their first birthday. For the full picture of garden hedgehogs — survival odds by age, what kills them and how to help — see our wild hedgehog lifespan and survival explorer.
African pygmy hedgehog lifespan
The African pygmy hedgehog lifespan is the same 4–6 years described above, because the African pygmy hedgehog is the pet hedgehog. You will see it sold under several names, and they all refer to the same animal:
- Four-toed hedgehog or white-bellied hedgehog: the Merck Veterinary Manual lists "four-toed hedgehogs (Atelerix albiventris), also known as African pygmy hedgehogs, white-bellied hedgehogs, or central African hedgehogs". So the four toed hedgehog lifespan is the African pygmy range.
- African hedgehog: VCA calls the pet "the African hedgehog, Atelerix albiventris". The African hedgehog lifespan, or the answer to "how long do African hedgehogs live?", is again 4–6 years, some 8–10.
- Domestic hedgehog: a general name for the pet. Wikipedia notes that many pet-trade animals may be hybrids of the four-toed hedgehog and the Algerian hedgehog (A. algirus), but this hasn't been proven. The domestic hedgehog lifespan is the same as above.
- Mini or pygmy hedgehog: a sales name. We found no vet source that treats a "mini hedgehog" as a separate species, so the mini hedgehog lifespan and the pygmy hedgehog lifespan are the African pygmy figures. A hedgehog sold as "mini" is not guaranteed to stay small.
Whichever label is on the cage card, the hedgehog lifespan African pygmy owners should plan for is 4–6 years. Adults usually weigh 300–400 g (females) or 400–600 g (males), according to Merck, so they're not especially "pygmy" next to a wild European hedgehog of 450–1,500 g.
Does colour affect lifespan? Albino and other hedgehog colours
Pet hedgehogs come in many colours: standard "salt and pepper", albino, pinto (patches with no colour), cinnamon, snowflake, chocolate, apricot and more. Breeders recognise many more shades, and Wikipedia's article on domesticated hedgehogs lists albino and pinto among the colours that became common as breeding spread.
We checked the veterinary sources on this page and found none that links colour to lifespan. Merck, VCA and the RVC give one lifespan for the species, whatever its colour. That means the albino hedgehog lifespan is the normal 4–6 years. Wikipedia's article on domesticated hedgehogs also says albinos don't have additional health issues, though it gives no study. The colour menu in the calculator is there so you can record it; it never changes the result.
What matters more than colour is health history. When you buy a hoglet, ask the breeder how old its parents and grandparents lived to and whether any had wobbling, tumours or heart disease, then book an exotic-vet check within the first few days — VCA notes that health guarantees usually require one within about 48 hours.
Average lifespan of a hedgehog: what the numbers mean
When you read "the average lifespan of a hedgehog is 4–6 years", that is an average, not a promise or a limit. Three different numbers get mixed up:
- Average life: the age most pets reach. For the hedgehog average lifespan, vets give 4–6 years, and the RVC gives 3–5.
- Upper range: what a healthy, well-kept hedgehog can reach: 8–10 years (VCA).
- Maximum: the oldest reliably recorded. The hedgehog max age in the AnAge database is 11.4 years.
So the average life of hedgehog pets is about five years, but the life span of a hedgehog can stretch to double that. How long can hedgehogs live, then? Up to about 10 years, and a little more in very rare cases. How old can hedgehogs live, at the extreme? The recorded maximum is 11.4 years. And if you are asking how old do hedgehogs live up to on average, plan for 4–6 and be delighted by anything beyond.
Can a hedgehog live 10 years?
Yes, but it's rare. VCA says some pet hedgehogs live 8–10 years, and the RVC mentions a hedgehog that reached 10 in captivity. A 10-year-old hedgehog has lived about 200% of the average 5-year lifespan. Enter "10 years" in the calculator to see it.
The oldest hedgehog on record
There is no Guinness World Records entry for the oldest hedgehog kept as a pet, and the stories of 12- or 14-year-old pets that circulate online have no record we could check, so we don't repeat them. The best verified figure for the pet species comes from the AnAge longevity database, which lists a maximum of 11.4 years in captivity for the four-toed hedgehog, from zoo records compiled by Richard Weigl (2005). AnAge rates the data quality as high.
For wild hedgehogs, the record is better documented. In 2023, Danish researchers aged 697 dead European hedgehogs by counting growth lines in their jawbones and found a male, Thorvald, who had lived to 16 years — the oldest scientifically documented European hedgehog (Rasmussen et al. 2023). That's a different species, though; see the oldest wild hedgehog on our wild page.
What shortens a pet hedgehog's life?
If you're wondering "why did my hedgehog die young?", these are the problems vets see most. This is general information only — diagnosis and treatment need an exotic-animal vet.
- Cancer. Merck says tumours are extremely common in pet hedgehogs, are most often diagnosed in hedgehogs over 3 years old (but have been found at 1), and that more than 80% are malignant. The RVC calls tumours "unfortunately very common in this species". So the typical hedgehog cancer age is 3 and over. Lumps, weight loss, bleeding or a hedgehog that stops eating all deserve a prompt vet visit.
- Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome (WHS). A progressive disease of the brain and spinal cord. Merck says it can occur at any age and that signs, starting with wobbling in the back legs, worsen over weeks. In one series, the median time from first signs to euthanasia was 51 days. Graesser and colleagues (2006) reported an average onset of 18.5 months. So the wobbly hedgehog syndrome lifespan is short once signs appear, and there is no cure. Wobbling can also be caused by being chilled, injury or other illness, so a vet check is essential.
- Obesity. Merck calls obesity "very common" in pet hedgehogs and links it to fatty liver disease. The RVC advises limiting food, feeding at night and removing leftovers in the morning.
- Dental disease. Common in hedgehogs (Merck, RVC). The RVC recommends including some dry food to help the teeth.
- Heart disease. Merck says cardiomyopathy is typically seen in hedgehogs of 3 or older, though it has been found at 1.
- Mites and skin disease. Merck says the mite Caparinia tripilis is very common; mites and ringworm are a frequent cause of quill loss (RVC). Treatable when caught early.
- Cold (torpor). Below 20 °C (68 °F), pet hedgehogs can slide into torpor, which Merck says suppresses the immune system and can lead to organ problems or starvation. Pet hedgehogs should never be allowed to "hibernate" — our hibernation checker explains the warning signs and safe temperatures.
How to help your hedgehog live longer
There's no guaranteed way to make a hedgehog live longer, as PetMD points out, but this checklist covers what the vet sources agree on. It's the same checklist as in the calculator.
- Keep it warm and steady: 24–29 °C (75–85 °F) is ideal and 22–32 °C acceptable (Merck). VCA gives 21–29 °C and the RVC 24–30 °C. Use a thermometer at hedgehog level.
- Feed a measured, low-fat diet: a good hedgehog or insectivore food, some insects, and only small amounts of treats. UF advises avoiding seeds, nuts, raisins, grapes, avocado and raw meat.
- Weigh weekly: Merck recommends weekly weighing. Slow weight gain often means overfeeding; weight loss can be the first sign of illness.
- Provide a solid exercise wheel: a wheel with a solid running surface (no rungs or spokes), big enough for your hedgehog (UF).
- See an exotic vet: soon after you get your hedgehog, then at least once a year (VCA, RVC, PetMD). The RVC notes that problems are more easily treated when found early.
- Avoid wire floors: the RVC says wire-bottomed cages injure feet; use a solid-floored tank or cage with good ventilation.
- House alone: hedgehogs are solitary and should be housed individually (RVC, Merck).
That's really all there is to how to make a hedgehog live longer: warmth, the right amount of the right food, exercise and early vet care. Genetics you can't control after purchase, which is why a reputable breeder matters.
Hedgehog lifespan compared with other small pets
Here's how the hedgehog compares with other popular small pets, using typical ranges from vet and welfare sources.
| Pet | Typical lifespan | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Pet hedgehog (African pygmy) | 4–6 years; some 8–10 | Merck (4–6); VCA (4–6, some 8–10) |
| Hamster | 1.5–3 years | Merck Veterinary Manual |
| Pet rat | 1.5–3 years | Merck Veterinary Manual |
| Pet mouse | 1.5–2.5 years | Merck Veterinary Manual |
| Guinea pig | 5–8 years | Merck Veterinary Manual |
| Ferret | 5–10 years | Merck, PDSA, VCA (see our ferret page) |
| Pet rabbit | 8–12 years | House Rabbit Society (indoor rabbits) |
| Chinchilla | 10–20 years | RSPCA; Merck |
Hedgehog lifespan vs hamster
A hedgehog lives roughly twice as long as a hamster. Merck gives hamsters 1.5–3 years, compared with 4–6 for a pet hedgehog. Both are nocturnal and both need a solid exercise wheel.
Hedgehog vs guinea pig lifespan
Guinea pigs typically live 5–8 years (Merck), a little longer than a hedgehog on average. A guinea pig is also social and lives in pairs, while a hedgehog lives alone.
Best long-lived small pets
If a long life together matters most, look at chinchillas (10–20 years; see our chinchilla lifespan page) and rabbits (8–12 years for indoor rabbits; see the rabbit lifespan by breed guide). Ferrets usually live 5–10 years (ferret age calculator). Among the best long-lived small pets, the hedgehog sits in the middle: longer-lived than a hamster or rat, shorter than a chinchilla or rabbit.
How this hedgehog lifespan calculator works
The calculator uses the Merck and VCA typical range of 4–6 years, with its middle, 5 years, as the average. A 1-year-old has used 20% of that average, a 3-year-old 60% and a 5-year-old 100%. "Average years left" counts down to 5 years; "to upper range" counts down to VCA's 10 years, so older hedgehogs still see how far a lucky one might go. Ages above the recorded maximum of 11.4 years show a friendly message instead of a result.
The timeline shows four stages — hoglet (to 6 weeks), juvenile (to 6 months), adult (to 3 years) and senior (from 3, when Merck says tumours and heart disease become more common) — and the care tips change with the stage. Sex and colour don't change the numbers, because we found no source that shows a difference. The care checklist doesn't change the numbers either: no study puts a figure on how many months good care adds, so instead it lists the care basics you haven't ticked yet.
Its limits: a lifespan average can't predict one hedgehog's future, and the calculator can't detect illness. It doesn't convert your hedgehog's age into human terms — for that, and for what each stage means, use our hedgehog age calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How long do hedgehogs live as pets?
Usually 4–6 years. The Merck Veterinary Manual and VCA both give 4–6 years, and VCA adds that some live 8–10. The Royal Veterinary College gives an average of 3–5 years.
What is the average lifespan of a hedgehog?
For a pet African pygmy hedgehog, about 5 years — the middle of the 4–6 year range from Merck and VCA. Wild European hedgehogs live about 2 years on average (PTES), mostly because so many die young.
How long do African pygmy hedgehogs live?
4–6 years on average, sometimes 8–10 (VCA). The African pygmy hedgehog is the same animal as the four-toed, white-bellied, African and domestic hedgehog, so they all share this lifespan.
How long do hedgehogs live in captivity?
About 4–6 years for pet African pygmy hedgehogs, with a recorded maximum of 11.4 years in captivity (AnAge).
Do albino hedgehogs live shorter lives?
We found no veterinary source that says so. Merck, VCA and the RVC give one lifespan for the species, so an albino hedgehog's lifespan is the usual 4–6 years.
How old is the oldest hedgehog?
The longest recorded for the pet species is 11.4 years in captivity (AnAge). The oldest documented wild European hedgehog lived to 16 (Rasmussen et al. 2023). There is no Guinness record for a pet hedgehog.
Can a hedgehog live 10 years?
Yes, occasionally. VCA says some pet hedgehogs live 8–10 years, and the RVC mentions one that reached 10 in captivity. A 10-year-old has lived about 100% of the average 5-year lifespan.
How long do hedgehogs live for on average if well cared for?
With very good care many reach 6 or more (University of Florida), and some 8–10 (VCA). PetMD, the most optimistic vet source, gives an average of 8–10 years in captivity.
What is a mini hedgehog's lifespan?
The same as any African pygmy hedgehog: 4–6 years. "Mini" and "pygmy" are sales names for the same pet, not a separate species.
Why did my hedgehog die young?
Common causes are cancer (very common from about age 3, Merck), Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome, heart disease, obesity-related liver disease and getting too cold. An exotic vet can sometimes tell you what happened, which helps if you get another hedgehog.
At what age do hedgehogs get cancer?
Merck says tumours are most often diagnosed in hedgehogs over 3 years old, though they have been found as young as 1, and more than 80% are malignant.
How long do hedgehogs live with wobbly hedgehog syndrome?
Usually weeks to months. Merck reports a median of 51 days from the first signs to euthanasia in one study, and the disease has no cure. See an exotic vet for any wobbling, because other, treatable problems can look similar.
Do hedgehogs live longer than hamsters?
Yes, about twice as long. Hamsters typically live 1.5–3 years (Merck) and pet hedgehogs 4–6. Guinea pigs live a little longer than hedgehogs, at 5–8 years.
How can I make my hedgehog live longer?
Keep it at 24–29 °C, feed a measured low-fat diet, weigh it weekly, give it a solid exercise wheel and take it to an exotic vet at least once a year (Merck, VCA, RVC, UF).
