Quick answer

Bulldogs (English or British Bulldogs) typically live 8–10 years (AKC). The largest UK study found a median of 9.8 years in 11,065 Bulldogs (McMillan 2024); older UK vet data gave 7.2 years (O'Neill 2019).

Bulldog life expectancy

The American Kennel Club gives the Bulldog — the English or British Bulldog — a life expectancy of 8 to 10 years, one of the shortest ranges of any breed it recognises. Real-world data from the UK broadly agree. The 2024 Dogs Trust-led study of 584,734 dogs included 11,065 Bulldogs, of which 4,743 had died, and found a median of 9.8 years (95% CI 9.7–10.0): half of the Bulldogs died before 9.8 and half lived longer (McMillan et al. 2024).

Older vet-record studies found lower figures. In 2013 data from UK practices, the median longevity of 181 Bulldogs that died was 7.2 years — 6.7 for males and 7.9 for females (O'Neill et al. 2019). A 2022 life-table study put English Bulldog life expectancy at birth at 7.39 years (Teng et al. 2022), and Kennel Club owner surveys in 2004 and 2014 reported median and mean ages at death of just over six years. So the honest answer to "how long do Bulldogs live?" is about 8 to 10 years, with many dying earlier and a lucky minority reaching their early teens.

British Bulldog life expectancy is the same thing under another name: in the UK the breed is usually called simply the Bulldog, and in the US the English Bulldog. This short life is not new: the 2019 RVC paper quotes a 1901 description of 7 years as "quite an old age for show Bulldogs".

Bulldog life span by source

As with other breeds, the numbers depend on what is being measured. A median age at death is the best single answer; life expectancy at birth averages every death including puppies; and owner surveys depend on who replies. Here is every sourced Bulldog life span figure we found, and what it measures.

The newest and largest study gives the highest figure. Part of the reason is size and breadth: it pooled insurers, breed registries, charities and vet practices. Part may be timing: Bulldogs, like French Bulldogs, became much more popular in the 2010s, and a population full of young dogs tends to produce younger average ages at death in older studies. Even at 9.8 years, Bulldogs were among the breeds most at risk from early death in the 2024 study, with a hazard ratio of 1.78 compared with crossbreeds.

Why English Bulldogs have short lives

The Bulldog's heavy, wide, flat-faced shape has been exaggerated over more than a century of showing, and vets now link much of the breed's poor health to it. In a 2022 Royal Veterinary College study of 2,662 English Bulldogs and 22,039 other dogs, English Bulldogs had about twice the odds of having at least one disorder diagnosed in a year, and higher odds of 24 of the 43 most common specific conditions (O'Neill et al. 2022). The authors concluded that "the health of English Bulldogs is substantially lower" than other dogs and called for the breed to be redefined towards a more moderate shape.

English Bulldog health problems with the strongest evidence
ProblemWhat the research found
Skin-fold infectionsEnglish Bulldogs had 38 times the odds of skin fold dermatitis compared with other dogs (O'Neill 2022); pyoderma affected 8.8% in a year (O'Neill 2019).
Breathing (BOAS)Lower respiratory tract disorders were 5.5 times as likely (O'Neill 2022); only 15.2% of Bulldogs tested in one study were free of BOAS signs (Tomlinson 2024).
Heat strokeBulldogs had about 14 times the odds of heat-related illness compared with Labradors — the second highest of any breed (Hall 2020).
EyesCherry eye (prolapsed third-eyelid gland) was 27 times as likely as in other dogs (O'Neill 2022).
Ears and weightOtitis externa affected 12.7% and overweight/obesity 8.7% of Bulldogs in a year (O'Neill 2019).
Heart disease and cancerHeart disease and cancer were the most commonly recorded causes of death (O'Neill 2019).

Some findings run the other way: English Bulldogs had lower odds of dental disease and spinal cord disorders than other dogs (O'Neill 2022) — the reverse of French Bulldogs for the spine. Of Bulldogs whose cause of death was recorded in 2013, heart disease (11.8%), cancer (10.9%) and brain disorders (9.1%) were the most common groups (O'Neill 2019). None of this means your own dog will develop these conditions, but it explains why the English Bulldog lifespan is short for a 40–50 lb dog.

How to help a Bulldog live longer

  1. Keep your Bulldog lean. Overweight or obesity was recorded in 8.7% of UK Bulldogs in a single year (O'Neill 2019), and dogs heavy for their breed and sex had higher odds of heat stroke (Hall 2020).
  2. Treat heat seriously. Bulldogs had about 14 times the odds of heat-related illness of Labradors, the second-highest risk of any breed (Hall et al. 2020). Exercise, not hot cars, caused 74% of heat-related illness in UK dogs (Hall et al. 2020, Animals), so keep walks short and cool in warm weather.
  3. Clean the folds every day. Skin fold dermatitis was 38 times as likely as in other dogs (O'Neill 2022). Wipe and dry the face, nose and tail folds daily, and see your vet about red, smelly or weepy skin.
  4. Use a harness. A collar presses on the windpipe of a flat-faced dog; a harness avoids that (PetMD).
  5. Ask about breathing grades. The UK Kennel Club and University of Cambridge Respiratory Function Grading Scheme assesses Bulldogs from 0 to 3 for BOAS. Only 15.2% of Bulldogs in one study were grade 0 (Tomlinson et al. 2024), so parents' grades are worth asking about.
  6. Plan anaesthetics carefully. Flat-faced dogs had post-anaesthetic complications in 13.9% of cases versus 3.6% in other dogs (Gruenheid 2018). Mention any breathing signs at pre-op checks.
  7. Keep up regular check-ups. Once a year for adults and every six months from about 6.8 years, when a Bulldog becomes a senior by AAHA guidelines.

Neutered Bulldogs lived longer than entire ones in the 2013 data (median 8.0 vs 6.7 years; O'Neill 2019), but that association has many possible causes. Whether and when to neuter is a decision to make with your vet.

English Bulldog vs French Bulldog lifespan

The two breeds share ancestry and a flat face, and in the 2024 UK study they even share the same median of 9.8 years. The differences are in the details: the AKC gives the smaller French Bulldog a longer typical range, but the English Bulldog's heat stroke risk is twice as high. Bulldog age in human years

Bulldogs weigh 40–50 lb, so they follow the AKC/AVMA chart for medium dogs: about 15 human years at 1, 24 at 2, then roughly 4–5 human years a year. These are the same numbers as on our dog age calculator by breed. With a typical lifespan of 8–10 years, a Bulldog becomes a senior at about 6.8 years — around 45.8 in human years.

How this Bulldog lifespan calculator works

  1. Range: the AKC's 8–10 years, with 9 in the middle. "Lifespan used" is your dog's age divided by 9.
  2. Estimate window: a 1-year window inside the range — 8.5–9.5 years with nothing ticked. Good habits (healthy weight, kept cool, vet visits) nudge it up; warning signs (noisy breathing, repeated skin-fold infections) pull it down more strongly. It never leaves 8–10 years, because no study gives a figure for an individual dog, so the result is labelled "estimate".
  3. Years left: the window minus your dog's age.
  4. Life stage and human years: the medium-dog chart and AAHA stages, matching the Bulldog entry in our dog age calculator by breed.
  5. Tips: drawn from your answers.

The UK median of 9.8 years is shown for context; it sits near the top of the AKC range. A Bulldog with severe breathing or heart disease may fall below the range, and some live beyond it. Your vet knows your dog best.
