Great Dane Life Expectancy: Male vs Female

The Great Dane life expectancy male and female owners can plan for is the same 7–10 years on the AKC figures — no study has split the breed by sex. Compare male and female Great Dane size, the giant-breed evidence on sex and lifespan, and the health risks linked to each sex.

Quick answer

No study gives separate figures, so male and female Great Danes share the AKC's 7–10 year range. Males are bigger: 30–32 in, 140–175 lb vs 28–30 in, 110–140 lb for females (AKC). Across 29 giant breeds, females died at a median of 9.3 years and males 8.5 (O'Neill 2026) — a group finding, not a Great Dane one.

General information only. No study has measured male and female Great Dane lifespans separately, so both sexes get the same range. Talk to your vet about your own dog.

Great Dane life expectancy: male

The AKC's life expectancy for the breed — 7 to 10 years — applies to males as much as females; no Great Dane study has reported a separate figure for each sex. A male Great Dane is simply the bigger version of the breed: the AKC breed page gives 30–32 inches at the shoulder and 140–175 lb, and the breed standard asks that a male "appear more massive throughout than the bitch, with larger frame and heavier bone".

Does that extra size cost males time? Possibly a little. Across all dogs, bigger bodies are linked with shorter lives (McMillan 2024), and in UK vet records of 29 giant breeds — Great Danes included — males died at a median of 8.49 years against 9.31 for females (O'Neill 2026). But that finding is for giant dogs as a group, and the paper did not break it down by breed, so we can't say how much of it applies to Danes. For a male, plan for the same 7–10 years and focus on the risks below.

In practical terms, Great Dane life expectancy male owners can work with is the breed's range: a male Dane is middle-aged by 3½, a senior at about 6.4 and past the typical range after 10. A 5-year-old male scores 45 in human years on the giant-dog chart — exactly what a female of the same age scores.

Great Dane lifespan: female

The Great Dane lifespan female owners should expect is the same 7–10 years. Females are smaller — 28–30 inches and 110–140 lb on the AKC breed page — and the standard allows a "somewhat longer body" for a bitch "providing she is well proportioned to her height". In UK first-opinion vet records, the median female Dane weighed 56.0 kg against 64.9 kg for males (O'Neill 2026), so the gap in real pet dogs is about 9 kg.

The giant-breed data hint at a female advantage, and that fits a wider pattern: across 584,734 UK dogs of every type, females had a median of 12.7 years and males 12.4 (McMillan 2024), and the authors note that a female survival advantage is "well documented in mammalian species". Still, a difference of a few months across all dogs is far smaller than the gap between a Dane that dies of bloat at 5 and one that lives to 11. The female-specific risks that matter most are reproductive, and they depend on whether she is spayed (see below).

Do male or female Great Danes live longer? What the evidence says

Short answer: we don't know for Great Danes. The three main sources — the AKC, the 2024 UK survival study and the 2026 VetCompass giant-breed study — all report one figure for the breed, not one per sex. What exists is evidence from larger groups of dogs:

Male vs female lifespan: what each study measured (no study splits Great Danes by sex)
Group studiedMalesFemalesSource
Great DanesNo sex split reportedNo sex split reportedAKC; McMillan 2024; O'Neill 2026
29 UK giant breeds (incl. Great Dane), deaths in 20198.49 years (556 dogs)9.31 years (507 dogs)O'Neill 2026
UK large purebreds (survival analysis)11.8 years12.0 yearsMcMillan 2024
All UK dogs (survival analysis)12.4 years12.7 yearsMcMillan 2024

Every row points the same way — females slightly ahead — and the gap is widest in the giant breeds. It would be reasonable to guess that female Danes live a little longer, but a guess is not a measurement, so this calculator gives both sexes identical lifespan numbers and says so: "No reliable evidence that male and female Great Danes live different lengths of time."

  • Why the gap might exist: males are bigger, and size speeds ageing in dogs (Kraus 2013).
  • Why it might not apply: the giant-breed figures mix 29 breeds with different sex ratios and causes of death, and the study authors did not adjust for breed.
  • What matters more: bloat, heart disease and bone cancer affect both sexes and decide most early deaths.

Male vs female Great Dane size

Male vs female Great Dane size is where the clearest differences are. Both sets of figures below are from the AKC, plus the median weights of pet Danes in the UK, which run lighter than the show-dog range:

Male vs female Great Dane size: height, weight and lifespan (AKC; UK VetCompass)
MaleFemale
Height at the shoulder (AKC breed page)30–32 in (76–81 cm)28–30 in (71–76 cm)
Breed standard minimum (AKC, 2018)30 in; 32 in or more preferred28 in; 30 in or more preferred
Weight (AKC breed page)140–175 lb (63.5–79.4 kg)110–140 lb (49.9–63.5 kg)
Median weight of UK pet Danes (VetCompass 2019)64.9 kg (143.1 lb)56 kg (123.5 lb)
Lifespan range used here7–10 years7–10 years

Male Great Dane size is therefore about 2 inches taller and 30–35 lb heavier at both ends of the AKC range. Female Great Dane size still puts her firmly among the giant breeds — even a small female outweighs most Labradors. For month-by-month growth and the typical weight of puppies of each sex, see our Great Dane weight chart.

Health risks by sex: male and female Great Danes

Most Great Dane health problems hit both sexes. The table lists the few where sources describe a sex-linked difference, alongside the breed risks that affect everyone:

Male and female Great Dane health problems with a sourced sex link
ConditionMaleFemale
DCM (heart muscle disease)Possible higher risk: a pedigree study suggested X-linked recessive inheritance (Meurs 2001)Affected too — 35.6% of screened UK Danes of both sexes had DCM (Stephenson 2012)
Bloat (GDV)Seen more often in large, deep-chested male dogs (VCA)Same breed risk; no female protection reported
Mammary cancer—2% of intact females in a UC Davis Great Dane sample (Hart 2020)
Pyometra (womb infection)—6% of intact females in the same sample (Hart 2020)
Joint disorders1% of intact males (Hart 2020)2% of intact females (Hart 2020)

Male Great Dane health problems

The most important sex-linked point for males concerns the heart. When researchers traced the pedigrees of 17 Great Danes with DCM, the pattern suggested X-linked recessive inheritance, and they advised that "male offspring of affected females are at an increased risk of developing DCM and should be evaluated periodically" (Meurs, Miller & Wright 2001). The authors called the result preliminary, and a later UK study suggested autosomal dominant inheritance instead (Stephenson 2012) — so treat it as a reason for heart checks, not a certainty. VCA also notes that bloat is seen more commonly in large, deep-chested male dogs.

Female Great Dane health problems

For females the sex-linked risks are reproductive. In a UC Davis study of 353 Great Danes, 2% of intact females had mammary cancer and 6% had pyometra, a womb infection that needs emergency treatment (Hart et al. 2020). The authors point out that their records ended before the age when mammary cancer usually appears, so the lifetime figure is likely higher. Signs of pyometra include drinking more, lethargy and discharge, usually weeks after a season — see a vet the same day if you notice them.

Spaying and neutering a giant breed

The same UC Davis study found that, for Great Danes, neutered dogs of either sex showed no evident increase in joint disorders or in the cancers the team followed, at any neutering age (Hart 2020). Joint disorders were rare in the breed overall: 1% of intact males and 2% of intact females. Timing is a decision for you and your vet, weighing the dog's growth, lifestyle and the reproductive risks above. If you plan to neuter, ask your vet whether a preventive gastropexy can be done at the same time (MSD).

How this male vs female comparison works

  1. Lifespan: the same engine and the same AKC 7–10 year range as our Great Dane lifespan calculator (with nothing ticked on its checklist). Because no source gives a sex difference for Danes, a male and a female of the same age get identical results — for example, a 5-year-old gets a 8–9 year estimate window and is a mature adult.
  2. Size: the AKC height and weight range for the sex you choose, converted to centimetres and kilograms, plus the UK median weight from VetCompass.
  3. Health points: the sourced sex-linked risks above.
  4. Spay/neuter note: what the UC Davis study found for Great Danes, with a reminder to discuss timing with your vet. We give no advice on when to neuter.
  5. Human years: the giant-dog chart used across PetYearsCalc.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Great Dane life expectancy for a male?

7–10 years, the same AKC range as for the breed. No study gives a separate figure for male Great Danes.

What is the Great Dane lifespan for a female?

Also 7–10 years. Female Danes may live slightly longer — giant-breed females did in UK vet records — but no Great Dane-specific figure exists.

Do male or female Great Danes live longer?

There's no reliable Great Dane evidence. Across 29 giant breeds, females had a median age at death of 9.31 years and males 8.49 (O'Neill 2026).

How big is a male Great Dane compared with a female?

Males stand 30–32 inches and weigh 140–175 lb; females stand 28–30 inches and weigh 110–140 lb (AKC).

Are male Great Danes more likely to get heart disease?

Possibly. One pedigree study suggested DCM may be X-linked, putting male puppies of affected mothers at higher risk (Meurs 2001), but both sexes are affected.

What health problems are specific to female Great Danes?

Mammary cancer and pyometra in unspayed females — 2% and 6% in one UC Davis sample (Hart 2020).

Does spaying or neutering affect a Great Dane's lifespan?

No study shows a lifespan effect. In 353 Great Danes, neutering did not raise joint disorders or the cancers studied (Hart 2020). Ask your vet about timing.

Should I choose a male or female Great Dane for a longer life?

Sex is a weak predictor. Health-tested parents, slow puppy growth, a lean adult weight and fast action on bloat matter far more for either sex.

Is a female Great Dane a senior at a different age?

No. Both sexes become seniors at about 6.4 years, the last quarter of the 7–10 year range.

An estimate, not a prediction. Every Great Dane is different — for health decisions, talk to your veterinarian.
