Great Danoodle Life Expectancy: Lifespan & Age

Great Danoodle life expectancy is usually given as 8–12 years, but the Great Dane × Standard Poodle cross has never been studied. This calculator shows that estimate next to the measured lifespans of both parent breeds, plus your Danoodle's age in human years and life stage.

Quick answer

Pet-care sites give the Great Danoodle about 8–12 years (estimate — designer breed). Its parents' measured UK medians are 10.6 years (Great Dane) and 14.0 years (Poodle) (McMillan 2024), and size is the biggest unknown: a Dane-sized Danoodle is likely to live more like a Dane.

General information only. The Great Danoodle has never been studied, so every lifespan figure here is an estimate. Your vet can assess your own dog's health.

Great Danoodle life expectancy

A Great Danoodle (also called a Great Doodle or Danedoodle) is a cross between a Great Dane and a Standard Poodle. Pet-care sites usually put Great Danoodle life expectancy at around 8 to 12 years; A-Z Animals, for example, says it "frequently" lands at "~8–12 years", and other pet sites quote similar ranges. Treat that as an estimate. A Great Danoodle is a designer cross, not a breed: there is no kennel club standard, no breed club health survey and no study that has followed Danoodles to see how long they really live.

The two parents, on the other hand, are well measured. In the largest UK study of dog lifespans, Great Danes had a median survival of 10.6 years and Poodles (all three sizes counted together) 14.0 years (McMillan et al. 2024). The AKC gives 7–10 years for the Great Dane and 10–18 for the Standard Poodle. A first-generation cross usually falls between its parents, so the 8–12 year estimate is plausible, with size the biggest unknown: the more a Danoodle takes after its giant parent, the more its lifespan is likely to look like a Dane's.

So how long do Great Danoodles live? Probably a little longer than a typical Great Dane and shorter than a Standard Poodle — but don't count on "hybrid vigour" to add years. The 2024 UK study found little evidence for it: almost half of purebred breeds (47.1%) actually had a longer median than the crossbred group, and the authors wrote that "there is little evidence to support the existence of either evolutionary process (i.e., hybrid vigor or inbreeding depression)".

What the parent mix changes

The calculator lets you choose a 50/50 mix, a mostly Great Dane mix or a mostly Poodle mix. No study shows that the mix changes a Danoodle's lifespan, so the main estimate stays at 8–12 years. What the mix changes is a simple weighted average of the parents' measured medians — a cautious planning figure for Great Dane Poodle mix lifespan — and which dog-years curve we use:

Great Danoodle vs Great Dane vs Standard Poodle

Great Danoodle vs Great Dane is the comparison most people make when choosing a puppy. On paper the cross sits between its parents in size and lifespan; the only measured figures, though, belong to the parent breeds:

The weight row explains a lot. A Danoodle male can weigh anything from about 71 lb — Standard Poodle territory — to 165 lb, which is Great Dane size (A-Z Animals). Because lifespan falls as bodyweight rises in dogs (McMillan 2024; Kraus 2013), a big, Dane-sized Danoodle is unlikely to enjoy a Poodle's lifespan, while a lighter, leggier one may do better than a Dane. For a pure Great Dane, our Great Dane lifespan calculator has the breed's full figures.

Great Danoodle health: what affects how long they live

Because no Great Danoodle study exists, the Great Danoodle health problems below come from the parent breeds. A Danoodle may inherit some, all or none of them.

  • Bloat (GDV). Both parents are on the MSD Veterinary Manual's list of at-risk breeds — Great Danes first, Standard Poodles too — and both were among the 11 high-risk breeds followed in the main US bloat study (Glickman et al. 2000). A deep-chested Danoodle should be treated as high risk. Signs: retching without bringing anything up, drooling, restlessness and a swollen belly. Go to a vet immediately if you see them.
  • Heart disease. Dilated cardiomyopathy was found in 35.6% of UK Great Danes screened (Stephenson et al. 2012). Whether a Danoodle inherits the risk depends on its Dane parent, so ask about the parent's heart screening.
  • Bone cancer. Great Danes had 34 times the odds of osteosarcoma compared with crossbreeds, and heavier, longer-legged dogs were at higher risk overall (O'Neill 2023). A Danoodle's size is likely to matter here too.
  • Coat and skin. A Danoodle may have a wavy or curly Poodle-type coat or a shorter Dane-type one (A-Z Animals). Curly coats trap dirt and moisture, so regular brushing and drying matter.
  • Growth. A Danoodle puppy that takes after the Dane is a giant puppy, and giant puppies need controlled calcium and calories so they grow slowly (Marcellin-Little 2025).

The good-health basics are the same as for a Great Dane: keep your Danoodle lean, split food into at least two meals a day, ask your vet about bloat prevention (including whether a preventive gastropexy suits your dog), and book yearly check-ups. Talk to your vet about any concerns.

Great Danoodle size and life stages

Great Danoodle size varies more than either parent's, because the mix varies. A-Z Animals gives 71–165 lb and 26–33 in for males and 55–99 lb and 22–28 in for females. That spread crosses the line between large dogs (51–100 lb) and giants (over 100 lb) on the AKC/AVMA age chart, so the calculator has to choose a curve:

  • 50/50 and mostly Great Dane: the giant curve, because the typical adult male of these mixes weighs over 100 lb (A-Z Animals' average male: 115 lb).
  • Mostly Poodle: the large curve, because a mix closer to the Standard Poodle (40–70 lb, AKC) is expected to stay under about 100 lb.

If you know your adult dog's weight, that is the better guide: over 100 lb, think giant; under, think large. Life stages follow AAHA guidelines and the 8–12 year estimate, so a Great Danoodle becomes a senior at about 7.5 years; for a big, Dane-like dog, treating it as a senior from about 6½ like a Great Dane is a cautious choice.

How this Great Danoodle calculator works

  1. Lifespan range: 8–12 years from a pet-care profile (A-Z Animals), labelled "estimate — designer breed" everywhere it appears.
  2. Parent comparison: the Great Dane and Standard Poodle entries from our shared breed data — AKC ranges plus UK medians from the 2024 study — and a weighted average for the mix you choose (50/50, 75/25 or 25/75). The average is our arithmetic, not a measured figure.
  3. Human years: the AKC/AVMA giant-dog curve for 50/50 and mostly Great Dane mixes, and the large-dog curve for a mostly Poodle mix, for the size reasons above.
  4. Life stage and estimate window: the same lifespan engine as our Great Dane and Frenchton pages, applied to the 8–12 year range.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Great Danoodle life expectancy?

Pet-care sites give about 8–12 years, but it's an estimate: the Great Danoodle is a designer cross that has never been studied. Its parents' UK medians are 10.6 years (Great Dane) and 14.0 (Poodle).

How long do Great Danoodles live?

Probably longer than a typical Great Dane and shorter than a Standard Poodle. Size is the biggest factor: a Dane-sized Danoodle is likely to live more like a Dane.

What is the Great Dane Poodle mix lifespan compared with a Great Dane?

Likely a little longer. The AKC gives Great Danes 7–10 years; pet sites give the mix about 8–12. No study has compared them directly.

How big do Great Danoodles get?

Males 71–165 lb and 26–33 in, females 55–99 lb and 22–28 in (A-Z Animals). Size depends on which parent the dog takes after.

What are common Great Danoodle health problems?

The parent breeds' risks: bloat (both parents are at-risk breeds), heart disease and bone cancer from the Dane side, and coat and skin care from the Poodle side.

Is a Great Danoodle healthier than a Great Dane?

Not necessarily. Crossbreeds don't reliably live longer (McMillan 2024), and both parents are prone to bloat. Health-tested parents matter more than the cross.

Is the Great Danoodle recognised by the AKC?

No. It's a designer cross with no breed standard, which is why its lifespan and size figures are estimates.

What is a Great Danoodle's age in human years?

On the giant-dog curve, about 12 at 1 year, 45 at 5 and 79 at 10. A mostly-Poodle mix uses the large curve: about 36 at 5.

When is a Great Danoodle a senior?

At about 7.5 years on the 8–12 year estimate — or about 6½ for a large, Dane-like dog, to be cautious.
