Male Betta Fish Lifespan vs Female: Who Lives Longer?

The male betta fish lifespan is 3–5 years with good care, and females live just as long as far as any source shows. Pick your betta's sex and enter its age to see how much of a typical lifespan it has used, its life stage and the housing that suits a male or female.

Quick answer

Male and female bettas both live about 3–5 years with good care (PetMD; Unusual Pet Vets). No study shows one sex outliving the other; PangoVet lists up to 4 years for both. What differs is housing: males must live alone, while females can share a 10-gallon-plus tank in a group of 3–5 (PetMD).

General information only. Vets publish few betta figures, so we combine vet, university, database and peer-reviewed sources and say which is which; pet-care sites are used only to fill gaps. For a sick or injured betta, see an aquatic (fish) vet. We give no medication advice.

Male betta fish lifespan

The male betta fish lifespan is three to five years with proper care — the same range vets give for bettas in general (PetMD; Unusual Pet Vets). So how long do male betta fish live compared with females? We couldn't find any study, database or vet source that gives the sexes different lifespans. PangoVet's comparison lists "up to 4 years" for both. That's why our calculator gives exactly the same numbers for a male, a female or a betta you're not sure about.

Searches for "betta fish lifespan male" usually come from owners of the long-finned males sold in cups. Those males are the most common pet bettas: UF/IFAS estimates that more than 100,000 male bettas are flown out of Thailand every week. Their long fins are the result of almost a century of selective breeding, and Chewy notes that inbreeding may shorten some bettas' lives — but no study has measured that by sex.

How long do female bettas live?

How long do female bettas live? Three to five years with proper care, like males. People also ask "how long do female betta fish live" because females are sold less often and sometimes kept in groups. Group living doesn't change the expected lifespan in any source we found, but it does change the risks: PetMD says three to five females can live together in a "sorority", in odd numbers because they form a pecking order, and the tank should be at least 10 gallons with plenty of hiding places. Without those, bullying and stress are the main dangers.

Breeding is the other difference. Animal Diversity Web describes how, by the end of spawning, "the female's fins are badly torn and she may even be missing some scales". Females that spawn repeatedly need time and clean water to recover. AnAge also notes that reproductive senescence — fertility declining with age — has been documented in bettas, so older fish of both sexes breed less.

Why sex doesn't change the numbers

In many animals one sex reliably outlives the other. For bettas, the evidence simply isn't there. The lifespan figures vets use come from pet bettas, mostly males; the scientific databases (AnAge, FishBase) give one figure for the species; and no peer-reviewed study we found compares how long male and female bettas live. Any claim that "males live longer" or "females live longer" is opinion.

What does differ is how each sex is usually kept — males alone, often in small containers; females alone or in groups. Those housing choices, plus water quality and temperature, matter far more than sex. The calculator's care checklist is the same for both for that reason.

Telling male and female bettas apart

Young bettas look alike. Animal Diversity Web says they show little colour or fin shape until about three months old, when sexing becomes easy because "males are usually more brightly colored and have longer fins than the females." On farms, UF/IFAS describes young bettas being reared together until 3–4 months, when males must be separated to stop them fighting.

Short-finned males (sometimes sold as plakats) can be mistaken for females, so look at body shape and behaviour as well as fins. Males build bubble nests at the surface and flare at their reflection; UF/IFAS describes them spreading their fins and flaring their gill covers almost immediately when they meet another male.

Housing that helps each sex live longer

  • Males: one per tank, always. PetMD warns that males "should never be housed together, as they will often fight, sometimes fatally". Avoid long-finned tank mates the betta may spar with and fin-nippers such as tiger barbs (PetMD).
  • Females: alone, or a group of 3–5 in a tank of 10 gallons or more with lots of cover (PetMD). Watch for one fish being chased and separate it if needed.
  • Both: a heater set to 76–81 °F (24–27 °C), gentle filtration, weekly 15–25% water changes and a lid (PetMD). Long fins drag in strong flow, so males especially benefit from calm water (UF/IFAS).

How this male vs female calculator works

% of lifespan used = age ÷ 4 years × 100 · same formula for males, females and "not sure"

Pick the sex and enter the age. The calculator runs the same engine as our betta fish lifespan calculator: 3–5 years with 4 as the average, with the life stage, years left and care score. A 2-year-old male and a 2-year-old female both show about 50% of a typical lifespan used; only the housing note in the result changes.

Frequently asked questions

Do male or female bettas live longer?

Neither, as far as the evidence goes. Vets give 3–5 years for bettas in general, and no study compares the sexes. PangoVet lists up to 4 years for both.

How long do male betta fish live?

Usually 3–5 years with a heater, filter and weekly water changes (PetMD). A few bettas are reported to reach about 10.

How long do female bettas live in a sorority?

The same 3–5 years if the group is kept well: 3–5 females, in odd numbers, in 10 gallons or more with lots of hiding places (PetMD).

At what age can you tell a male betta from a female?

From about three months, when colour and fins develop and males show longer fins and brighter colours (Animal Diversity Web).

Are female bettas smaller than males?

Usually slightly. PangoVet gives about 2–2.5 inches for females and 2.5–3 inches for males.

Can two male bettas live together?

No. PetMD says males should never be housed together, as they often fight, sometimes fatally.

Does breeding shorten a female betta's life?

No study measures it, but spawning is hard on females — they often end it with torn fins and missing scales (Animal Diversity Web) — so they need recovery time.

Is a 2 year old male betta old?

Middle-aged. A 2-year-old betta of either sex has used about 50% of a 4-year average lifespan.

Estimates for planning only. This calculator uses the same engine as our betta fish lifespan calculator, so results match for the same age. For a sick betta of either sex, see an aquatic (fish) vet.
