Cockroach Lifespan Calculator: How Long Do Cockroaches Live?

The cockroach lifespan ranges from about half a year to three years, depending on the species. The common German cockroach lives about 5.6–9.9 months from egg to death in a 24 °C home, while the big American cockroach can live two or three years. Choose the species, sex, stage and room temperature, and the calculator gives the remaining and total lifespan from published studies.

Quick answer

German cockroach: adults live 100–210 days, after about 2.4–3 months as egg and nymph at 24 °C (UF/IFAS; Penn State; Peterson et al. 2023). American cockroach: about 600 days to adulthood, then 90–706 days as an adult (UF/IFAS; Ebeling). Oriental: adults 34–181 days after a year or more as nymphs. Females usually outlive males.

Cockroach lifespan: how long do cockroaches live?

It depends heavily on the species. The cockroach lifespan runs from about half a year for the small German cockroach to two or three years for the large American cockroach. At an ordinary 24 °C (75.2 °F) home, a German cockroach spends about 2.4–3 months growing from egg to adult and then lives 100–210 days as an adult (UF/IFAS; Penn State). An American cockroach takes about 600 days to reach adulthood on average (UF/IFAS; Texas A&M) and can then live another year or more.

So how long do cockroaches live? Roughly:

  • German cockroach: about 5.6–9.9 months from egg to death at 24 °C — the shortest-lived of the common indoor species, but the fastest breeder.
  • Brown-banded cockroach: adults average 206 days (Ebeling); the whole life is about 11–18.4 months (up to 1.5 years).
  • Oriental cockroach: about a year and a half as a nymph at room temperature, then 34–181 days as an adult (Ebeling; UF/IFAS).
  • Smokybrown cockroach: about 600 days to adulthood and 3–9 months as an adult (UF/IFAS; Texas A&M).
  • American cockroach: the longest-lived: 10.1–57 months (up to 4.7 years) in total.

Those figures answer how long do cockroaches live for in a home or a lab where food and water are available. Searches phrased as how long cockroach live, how long roaches live, how long to cockroaches live or how long to roaches live all land on the same numbers, and so does how long does roaches live for or the shorter how long do a roach live. The calculator above narrows the range for one species, sex, stage and temperature.

How long can a cockroach live at most?

How long can a cockroach live under the best conditions? The record holders are American cockroaches. In laboratory cultures at 29 °C, life expectancy from the egg "averaged over 630 days, but was found to be as long as 1,293 days" — over three and a half years — and single adult females lived up to 706 days (Ebeling, quoting earlier studies). Gould and Deay (1940) recorded American adults living anywhere from 125 to 1,212 days (quoted by Ashby 2017). The German cockroach's best is far shorter: up to about 10 months as an adult (Truman 1961, quoted by Ebeling).

So how long can a roach live has two honest answers: a few months for the small indoor German roach that most kitchens have, and a few years for the big American roach of basements and sewers.

How temperature changes cockroach life

Cockroaches are cold-blooded, so warmth sets the pace of growing up. In a 2023 Auburn University study, German cockroach nymphs needed about 87 days to become adults at 20 °C, 41 days at 25 °C and 31 days at 30 °C. At 35 °C development slowed again to 34 days and only 67% survived, and at 15 °C every nymph died in its first stage (Peterson, Hu & Appel 2023). Egg cases follow the same rule: American egg cases hatch in 57.4 days at 24.4 °C but 31.8 days at 30 °C (Ebeling).

What hasn't been measured is how temperature changes the adult part of the cockroach life. The calculator therefore adjusts development for temperature but keeps the adult figures as published, and tells you when your temperature is outside the measured range.

Cockroach life expectancy by species

The cockroach life expectancy table below brings the five common pest species together. "Egg to adult" is at 24 °C where temperature data exist; adult lifespans are the published ranges for females (F) and males (M).

Sources: German — Peterson et al. 2023 (nymphs), Gould & Deay 1940 and Ross 1929 via Ebeling (egg case), Penn State, UF/IFAS and Virginia Tech (adults). American — Ebeling (egg case; adults at 29 °C), Penn State (nymphs 160–971 days), UF/IFAS. Oriental and brown-banded — Ebeling and Penn State. Smokybrown — UF/IFAS and Texas A&M. Brown-banded and smokybrown adult figures are not split by sex. The last three rows are not part of the comparison chart: the Florida woods cockroach is one of the insects called a palmetto bug (UF/IFAS), and the dubia and hissing cockroaches are kept as feeders and pets, so their figures come from husbandry sources (marked on their own pages).

Which cockroach lives the longest?

The American cockroach, by a wide margin. It is also the largest, at 34–54 mm (UF/IFAS), and it takes the longest to grow up: its nymphs moult 10 to 13 times (UF/IFAS) over 160–971 days (Penn State). The shortest-lived is the German cockroach — yet it is the one people struggle with most, because a short life is no handicap when each female can produce four to eight egg cases of 30–40 eggs (UF/IFAS). The cockroach lifespan by species and the speed of breeding are almost mirror images of each other.

If you know you have German cockroaches, the German cockroach lifespan calculator goes into more detail, and the German cockroach life cycle calculator gives the dates for each stage.

Male vs female cockroach lifespan

In most species studied, females outlive males — though the samples are often small and the ranges overlap a lot. Here's the male vs female cockroach lifespan evidence by species:

  • German: "Female roaches live about 200 days and males not as long" (Virginia Tech). Penn State gives 20–30 weeks for adult females; UF/IFAS gives 100–200 days for adults in general.
  • American: at 29 °C, adult females lived 90–706 days (average 225) and males 90–362 days (average 200) (Ebeling). Penn State says a female can live up to 15 months "under ideal conditions, males for a somewhat shorter period".
  • Oriental: adult females lived 34–181 days and males 112–160 days at room temperature — but that comes from just five females and four males (Ebeling). The female range is wider in both directions.
  • Brown-banded and smokybrown: the sources we could verify give one range for both sexes (brown-banded 131–315 days, average 206; smokybrown 3–9 months, average 215 days). Penn State adds that brown-banded females live 13–45 weeks.

Females also matter more for control. A German female carries her egg case until just before the eggs hatch (UF/IFAS), which protects the eggs, and Penn State notes that this is why "a greater number of nymphs hatch successfully". An American female, by contrast, drops or glues her egg case within about a day (Penn State). Sex makes a modest difference to how long one cockroach lives; it makes a huge difference to how many follow it.

How to tell a male from a female

Adult females are usually broader at the rear. In German cockroaches, a female carrying a light brown, purse-shaped egg case is unmistakable (Penn State). American males have wings that reach 4 to 8 mm past the tip of the abdomen, so they look longer than females (UF/IFAS). Oriental males have wings reaching a little over half the body, and females' wings are smaller still (Texas A&M). If you can't tell, choose "Not sure" and the calculator uses the full range for both sexes.

How long do baby cockroaches (nymphs) live?

Baby cockroaches are called nymphs: they hatch looking like small, wingless adults and grow by moulting. How long do baby cockroaches live as babies depends on the species and the warmth: German nymphs need about 31 days at 30 °C but 87 days at 20 °C (Peterson et al. 2023), Oriental nymphs about a year and a half at room temperature (Ebeling), and American nymphs anywhere from 160 to 971 days (Penn State). Newly hatched nymphs are also the most fragile: first-stage American nymphs kept without food or water in dry conditions didn't survive a single day (Ashby 2017). For each stage, its size and the time to adulthood at your temperature, use the cockroach life cycle calculator.

Why cockroaches are so hard to outlast

Asking why cockroaches are hard to kill is really asking why a population outlives every individual in it. The research points to five reasons:

  1. They live hidden. German cockroaches spend about 75% of their lives in cracks 1/32 to 3/16 inch wide, coming out at night (Texas A&M). Seeing them in daylight usually means there are many.
  2. Most of the population is young. Actively growing German populations are about 80% nymphs and 20% adults (UF/IFAS), so killing the adults you see barely dents the next generation.
  3. Eggs are protected. The egg case shields the eggs, and German females carry theirs until they're ready to hatch (UF/IFAS; Penn State).
  4. Generations overlap. German cockroaches "breed continuously with many overlapping generations present at any one time" (UF/IFAS) — three to four generations a year, up to six (UF/IFAS).
  5. They're tough when times are bad. Adults survive weeks without food, though not long without water — see how long a cockroach can live without food or water. Their decentralised nervous system lets the body keep working for a while after injury — see how long a cockroach can live without its head. And they can hold their breath and close their breathing holes — see how long a cockroach can live underwater.

Extension entomologists agree on what does work: sanitation, sealing cracks and gaps, fixing leaks, sticky monitors to find hot spots, and baits rather than sprays or "bug bombs" (Texas A&M; University of Kentucky). The CDC adds that sprays and foggers can themselves trigger asthma attacks. Cockroach droppings and cast skins contain allergens linked to asthma (Penn State; University of Kentucky), so for an established infestation, a licensed pest professional is the reliable route.

How this cockroach lifespan calculator works

Every cockroach page on this site uses one shared data model, so the same species, sex and temperature always give the same number:

  • Development (egg case and nymphs): straight-line interpolation between measured temperatures, held at the nearest measured value outside them (the result says so). German nymphs: Peterson, Hu & Appel (2023) at 20, 25, 30 and 35 °C. Egg cases: Gould & Deay (1940) and Ross (1929) for German, and Ebeling's figures for American, Oriental and brown-banded. Gould & Deay's "room temperature" figures are placed at 24.4 °C (76 °F), the temperature Ebeling gives for their cultures. American nymphs (160–971 days) and smokybrown development (about 600 days) have no temperature data, so they aren't adjusted.
  • Adult lifespan: the published range for the sex you choose (both sexes for "Not sure"). It isn't adjusted for temperature, because no study we found measured that.
  • Remaining lifespan: for an adult, the adult range. For a nymph of unknown age, from the adult range (if it's about to moult) up to a full nymph stage plus the adult range.
  • Total from the egg: egg case + nymphs + adult.

These are laboratory and extension figures for cockroaches with food and water. Real roaches in homes die sooner from insecticides, predators and accidents, and longer-lived individuals exist.

Frequently asked questions

How long do cockroaches live?

From about half a year to three years, depending on the species. German cockroaches live about 5.6–9.9 months from egg to death at 24 °C; American cockroaches take about 600 days to grow up and can then live another year or more (UF/IFAS).

What is the average lifespan of a cockroach?

For the German cockroach, the most common indoor species, adults live about 100–200 days (UF/IFAS) and females about 200 (Virginia Tech). For the American cockroach, adults average about 200–225 days at 29 °C after roughly 600 days as egg and nymph (Ebeling; UF/IFAS).

What is the average lifespan of a roach in a house?

Usually the German cockroach's: a few months as a nymph and 100–210 days as an adult. Brown-banded roaches, also indoor pests, average 206 days as adults (Ebeling).

How long can a cockroach live at most?

American cockroaches have lived up to 1,293 days from the egg in laboratory cultures at 29 °C, and single adult females up to 706 days (Ebeling).

Which cockroach lives the longest?

The American cockroach. It is the largest common pest species and the slowest to mature: about 600 days from egg to adult (UF/IFAS; Texas A&M).

Do male or female cockroaches live longer?

Females, in most species measured. German females live about 200 days and males not as long (Virginia Tech); American females averaged 225 days as adults at 29 °C, males 200 (Ebeling).

How long do baby cockroaches live?

Nymphs keep growing for weeks to years before becoming adults: about 31–87 days for German nymphs depending on temperature (Peterson et al. 2023) and 160–971 days for American nymphs (Penn State).

How long is a cockroach lifespan in days?

About 172–303 days for a German cockroach at 24 °C, from the egg. American cockroaches can exceed 1,000 days.

Does temperature change how long cockroaches live?

It changes how fast they grow up. German nymphs took about 87 days at 20 °C but 31 days at 30 °C; at 15 °C none survived to adulthood (Peterson et al. 2023).

What is the life span of a roach compared with a bed bug?

Similar for the German cockroach: well-fed adult bed bugs live 99–300 days in the lab (Virginia Tech), German cockroach adults 100–210 days. See our bed bug lifespan calculator.

Why are cockroaches so hard to get rid of?

They hide in tiny cracks, most of a population is nymphs, eggs are protected in egg cases, generations overlap and adults survive weeks without food. Sanitation, sealing and baits work better than sprays (Texas A&M; University of Kentucky).

Can a cockroach live for years?

An American cockroach can. Egg to adult averages about 600 days and adults may live another 400 (UF/IFAS).

How long do cockroaches live without food?

Weeks, if they have water — about a month for German adults (Virginia Tech). See the cockroach without food and water timer.
