Quick answer

A 3 month old puppy is about 4.5 human years old, a 6 month old puppy about 10, and a 1-year-old dog about 15. The first year of a dog's life equals roughly 15 human years.

How old is my puppy in human years?

Puppies grow up at an astonishing speed. In the first year a dog goes from a helpless newborn to a sexually mature young adult — the same journey that takes a person about 15 years. That's why the old "one dog year equals seven human years" rule is especially wrong for puppies: it says a 6-month-old puppy is 3½, when in development terms it's closer to a 10-year-old child.

This puppy age calculator converts puppy months (or weeks) into human years using the life-stage milestones veterinarians use: about 10 human years at 6 months and 15 human years at 1 year (AAHA canine age chart), and 24 human years at age 2. Between those milestones we interpolate smoothly, so you can check any age — a 3 month old puppy, a 5 month old dog or even a 1 year and 4 months old dog.

Small, medium and large dogs develop at nearly the same pace during the first year. Giant breeds (like Great Danes) mature more slowly, so they're shown separately.

Puppy weeks in human years

For very young puppies, age in weeks is more useful. Here's how common ages like an 8 week, 10 week or 12 week old puppy translate:

Puppy development stages

  • 0–2 weeks (neonatal): eyes and ears closed, the puppy sleeps and nurses. Human equivalent: a newborn baby.
  • 2–4 weeks (transitional): eyes open, first steps, first baby teeth.
  • 3–14 weeks (socialization): the most important learning window. Gentle exposure to people, sounds and places shapes the adult dog.
  • 3–7 months (teething): 28 baby teeth are replaced by 42 adult teeth. Chewing is intense. A 6 month old dog is roughly a 10-year-old child.
  • 6–18 months (adolescence): the "teenage" phase — lots of energy and boundary testing. Large breeds keep growing well past their first birthday.
  • 1–2 years (young adult): at 1 year a dog is about 15 in human years; at 2 years about 24.

How the puppy calculator works

We use vet-published milestones and connect them with straight lines:

1 month ≈ 1 · 2 months ≈ 3 · 4 months ≈ 6 · 6 months ≈ 10 · 8 months ≈ 12 · 12 months ≈ 15 · 24 months ≈ 24 human years

After age 2 the calculator switches to the AKC/AVMA size chart, where small dogs add about 4 human years per year and giant dogs up to 7. For giant breeds the first year counts as about 12 human years, following the same chart.

Keep in mind that no single formula is perfect. A 2020 DNA-methylation study from UC San Diego suggested puppies may age even faster at the molecular level, while developmental charts focus on behavior and body growth. Our numbers follow the veterinary life-stage charts because they match what owners actually see — teething, adolescence and maturity.
