Female Rottweilers lived longer in UK vet records: a median of 9.5 years vs 8.7 years for males (O'Neill 2017). Males are bigger — 24–27 in, 95–135 lb vs 22–25 in, 80–100 lb (AKC). Studies of neutering disagree; talk to your vet about the timing that's right for your dog.
General information only. Studies of male and female Rottweilers describe groups of dogs, not your own dog. Decisions about spaying or neutering belong to you and your vet.
Rottweiler lifespan: female
Female Rottweilers live longer than males in the best data we have. In UK first-opinion vet records, the 208 females that died had a median age at death of 9.5 years, with the middle half dying between 7.8 and 11 years (O'Neill et al. 2017). That is the rottweiler lifespan female owners can reasonably plan around: about nine and a half years, with a good chance of reaching ten and a real minority living to eleven or beyond. The oldest female in that study was 14.2.
The female advantage is not unique to Rottweilers — across all UK dogs, females had a median of 12.7 years against 12.4 for males (McMillan 2024) — but in Rottweilers the gap is larger and statistically significant (P = 0.002). How long do female Rottweilers live compared with the AKC's 9–10 year range for the breed? Right in the upper half of it.
A female Rottweiler is also the smaller dog: 22–25 inches at the shoulder under the AKC standard and 80–100 lb on the AKC breed page. UK pet females weighed a median of 41.5 kg as adults (O'Neill 2017).
Rottweiler lifespan: male
The Rottweiler lifespan male owners can expect is a little shorter. The 201 males that died in the same UK study had a median of 8.7 years, with the middle half between 6.8 and 10.1 — so a quarter of males died before about seven. The single oldest Rottweiler in the study, at 17.0 years, was a male, which shows how wide the spread is.
So how long do male Rottweilers live? Plan for eight to nine years, aim higher, and know that the difference between the sexes (0.8 years at the median) is smaller than the difference between a lean, well-monitored dog and one whose bone cancer or joint disease is found late. Males are the bigger sex — 24–27 inches and 95–135 lb on the AKC figures, with a median UK adult weight of 48.5 kg — and size is one likely reason for the gap.
Why female Rottweilers may live longer
Do female Rottweilers live longer than males? In UK vet records, yes. The more interesting question is why, and the best-known attempt to answer it comes from a North American study of exceptionally long-lived Rottweilers.
Researchers at the Gerald P. Murphy Cancer Foundation and Purdue University gathered the medical histories of 119 Rottweilers that lived to 13 or more — over 30% longer than the breed's average of 9.4 years — and compared them with 186 Rottweilers that died at 8.0–10.8 years (Waters et al. 2009). They found:
- Females were twice as likely as males to reach 13 (odds ratio 2.0, 95% CI 1.2–3.3).
- Removing the ovaries in the first 4 years of life erased that advantage — those females were no more likely than males to reach 13.
- Longer ovary exposure went with longer life. Females that kept their ovaries for 6 to 8 years were 3.2 times as likely to reach 13 as those spayed within the first 2 years, and 4.6 times as likely after adjusting for height, weight and the mother's longevity (95% CI 1.3–16.2).
- The link held even when deaths from cancer were left out, so it wasn't explained by protection against one disease.
The study has real limits. It was small, it used owner questionnaires and records, and it compared two chosen groups rather than following dogs from birth: Rottweilers that died before 8 or between 10.8 and 13.3 years weren't included. Families that keep a female intact for longer may also differ in other ways. The lead author did not recommend that owners delay spaying and said more research was needed (JAVMA News 2010). Treat it as evidence that ovarian hormones may matter for female longevity, not as a rule for your dog.
Does spaying or neutering change a male or female Rottweiler's lifespan?
This is where owners most want a clear answer, and where the studies disagree most. Does spaying affect Rottweiler lifespan? Does neutering affect Rottweiler lifespan in males? Here is what four studies found:
| Study | Dogs | Finding |
|---|---|---|
| UK vet records, 2013 (O'Neill 2017) | 415 deaths | Neutered dogs had the longer median: 9.4 vs 8.8 years for entire dogs |
| Australian vet records (Joone & Konovalov 2023) | 3,085 intact, 4,100 neutered | Neutered before 1 year: expected lifespan about 1.5 years (males) and 1 year (females) shorter; before 4.5 years: similar; after 4.5 years: no significant difference |
| North American exceptional-longevity study (Waters 2009) | 119 dogs aged 13+, 186 with usual lifespans | Females with the longest ovary exposure were more likely to reach 13; spaying in the first 4 years erased the female advantage |
| UC Davis hospital records (Hart 2020) | 854 Rottweilers | More joint disorders after neutering before 1 year (males) or before 6 months (females); the cancers studied were not raised at any neutering age |
The two largest record-based studies point in opposite directions. In UK records the neutered dogs lived longer on average; in Australian records neutering before 1 year was linked to shorter lives in both sexes. Neither study can prove cause and effect. Dogs are neutered for many reasons — sometimes because they are already unwell, sometimes because of where and how they live — and those reasons can affect lifespan on their own. The Australian authors concluded that an optimal neutering age for Rottweilers "remains to be established and may not exist", and reminded vets of the well-established benefits of neutering (Joone & Konovalov 2023).
Neutering also changes specific risks in both directions. It prevents pyometra, a womb infection seen in 12% of intact females in the UC Davis sample, and lowers the chance of unplanned litters; spaying later than 2 years was linked to fewer mammary cancers than staying intact in the same sample (5% vs 8%) (Hart 2020). On the other side, early neutering went with more joint disorders, mainly cruciate tears, in that sample, and weight gain was two to three times as common in neutered UK Rottweilers (O'Neill 2017). Talk to your vet about the timing that's right for your dog.
Male vs female Rottweiler size
Male vs female Rottweiler differences are clearest in size. The AKC standard sets height ranges and asks for males to be "characteristically more massive throughout" than females; the AKC breed page gives the weights. UK pet Rottweilers run lighter than the AKC ranges:
| Male | Female | |
|---|---|---|
| Height at the shoulder (AKC standard) | 24–27 in (61–69 cm) | 22–25 in (56–64 cm) |
| Weight (AKC breed page) | 95–135 lb (43.1–61.2 kg) | 80–100 lb (36.3–45.4 kg) |
| Median adult weight of UK pet Rottweilers | 48.5 kg (IQR 43–54) | 41.5 kg (IQR 37–46.4) |
| Median age at death, UK vet records | 8.7 years (IQR 6.8–10.1; 201 dogs) | 9.5 years (IQR 7.8–11; 208 dogs) |
Male Rottweiler size is about two inches taller and 15–35 lb heavier than female Rottweiler size across the AKC ranges, and the gap in UK pet dogs was 7 kg at the median. For growth month by month and typical puppy weights of each sex, see our Rottweiler age chart.
Health risks for male and female Rottweilers
Most Rottweiler health problems affect both sexes equally — the UK study found no sex difference in any of the ten most common causes of death (O'Neill 2017). The table lists the few measured differences:
| Risk | Male | Female | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Median lifespan (UK) | 8.7 years | 9.5 years | O'Neill 2017 |
| Hot spots (pyotraumatic dermatitis), one year | 4.1% | 1.8% | O'Neill 2017 |
| Urinary system disorders, one year | 1.4% | 3.6% | O'Neill 2017 |
| Joint disorders, intact dogs | 8% | 16% | Hart 2020 |
| Cancers followed, intact dogs | 16% | 11% | Hart 2020 |
| Pyometra / mammary cancer, intact females | — | 12% / 8% | Hart 2020 |
- Males had more skin problems overall (12.4% vs 9.5% in a year), driven by hot spots, and their extra size matters: dogs heavier than the breed average had 1.65 times the odds of bone cancer (O'Neill 2023).
- Females had more urinary disorders and, if left intact, carry the reproductive risks above. Signs of pyometra — drinking more, lethargy, discharge, usually weeks after a season — need a vet the same day.
- Both sexes share the breed's big risks: bone cancer, cruciate and joint disease, and bloat. Bloat is an emergency for either sex — go to a vet immediately.
How this male vs female comparison works
- Median for the sex: 9.5 years for females and 8.7 for males, from the same UK study row as our Rottweiler lifespan calculator's source table. "Lifespan used" is your dog's age divided by that median.
- Estimate window: a 1-year window in the middle of that sex's interquartile range — for a 6-year-old, 9–10 years for a female and 8–9 for a male. It is labelled an estimate, because no study can predict one dog's life.
- Life stage and human years: exactly as on our other Rottweiler pages — the large-dog chart and the AKC's 9–10 year range — so both sexes of the same age get the same stage and human age.
- Size: the AKC height and weight for the sex you choose, plus the UK median weight.
- Spay/neuter note: a plain summary of the research that matches your answer, with no recommendation either way.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Rottweiler lifespan for a female?
A median of 9.5 years in UK vet records, with the middle half of females dying between 7.8–11 years (O'Neill 2017).
What is the Rottweiler lifespan for a male?
A median of 8.7 years in the same UK records (middle half 6.8–10.1 years).
Do female Rottweilers live longer than males?
Yes, on average. The 0.8-year gap in UK records was statistically significant (P = 0.002), and a North American study found females twice as likely to reach 13 (O'Neill 2017; Waters 2009).
How long do male Rottweilers live?
Usually 8 to 9 years, with some living far longer — the oldest Rottweiler in the UK study was a 17-year-old male.
How long do female Rottweilers live?
Usually 9 to 10 years; a quarter of UK females that died were 11 or older.
Does spaying affect Rottweiler lifespan?
Studies disagree. Australian records linked spaying before 1 year to about a year less life, while UK records found a longer median for neutered Rottweilers. Talk to your vet about the timing that's right for your dog.
Does neutering affect Rottweiler lifespan in males?
In Australian records, males neutered before 1 year had an expected lifespan about 1.5 years shorter than intact males (Joone & Konovalov 2023). That is an association, not proof — talk to your vet.
How big is a male Rottweiler compared with a female?
Males stand 24–27 inches and weigh 95–135 lb; females stand 22–25 inches and weigh 80–100 lb (AKC).
Is a male or female Rottweiler healthier?
Neither overall: both sexes had the same median number of disorders in UK records. Males had more skin problems and females more urinary problems (O'Neill 2017).
Are male and female Rottweilers seniors at different ages?
Not on our charts: both become seniors at about 7.1 years, the last quarter of the AKC's 9–10 year range.
Should I get a male or female Rottweiler for a longer life?
Females live a little longer on average, but parent health tests, a lean weight, early checks for lumps and limps, and quick action on bloat matter more for either sex.
