Quick answer

A 1-year-old French Bulldog is about 15 in human years, a 2-year-old about 24, a 5-year-old about 36 and a 10-year-old about 56 (AKC/AVMA small-dog chart). Frenchies become seniors at about 8.3 years. For how long they live, see the French Bulldog lifespan guide.

French Bulldog age in human years

Every dog grows up fast and then slows down, so multiplying by seven gets a Frenchie's age wrong at almost every point. The AKC and AVMA chart that vets use for small dogs counts the first year as about 15 human years, the second as about 9 more (24 at age 2), and every year after that as about 4 human years. A 1-year-old French Bulldog is a teenager, not a seven-year-old child.

That gives some easy reference points. A 3-year-old Frenchie is about 28, a 5-year-old about 36, an 8-year-old about 48 and a 10-year-old about 56 in human years. Our calculator does the in-between ages for you, including months, and it accepts a birth date if you know it, so a dog born in spring gets credit for the extra months rather than a rounded-down age.

French Bulldogs are a bit of a borderline case. The chart's small column is meant for dogs up to about 20 lb, and UK vet records put the average adult Frenchie at 12.7 kg, or 28 lb (O'Neill et al. 2018). We still use the small-dog column because that is how PetYearsCalc classes the breed everywhere — including our small dog age calculator — so you get one consistent answer. If you prefer the medium-dog column, add a few years from middle age: at 10, a medium dog is 60 rather than 56. Neither is more "scientific"; both are conventions.

Frenchie years to human years in three steps

  1. Under 1 year: use the puppy milestones (about 10 human years at 6 months, 15 at 12 months).
  2. From 1 to 2: add about 9 years, reaching 24 at the second birthday.
  3. After 2: add about 4 human years for each extra year, so 24 + 4 × (age − 2).

French Bulldog age chart

This French Bulldog age chart lists every age from 3 months to 18 years, with the human-years equivalent and the life stage. Both come from the same functions the calculator uses, so the table and the calculator never disagree. Ages past 12 are rare for the breed, but they are included for the lucky few.

How French Bulldogs age differently from other dogs

On the chart, a French Bulldog ages exactly like a Chihuahua or a Shih Tzu. In real life, the breed's body tends to wear out sooner. Three differences matter when you read your Frenchie's human-years age:

  • The senior years start earlier. Because the typical Frenchie lifespan is shorter than most small breeds', the senior stage begins at about 8.3 years instead of the 10 or so that is typical for small dogs. At that point your Frenchie is only about 49 in chart terms, but already in the last quarter of a typical life.
  • Health problems appear young. Breathing problems, back disease and skin-fold infections often show up in the first few years. In UK vet records, the median age of French Bulldogs under care was only 1.3 years in 2013 (O'Neill 2018), and many of their diagnoses were in dogs under 3.
  • Puppies grow at a medium-dog pace. A 12–14 kg adult takes longer to fill out than a 3 kg toy breed, so a Frenchie looks like an adult by about 8 months but keeps gaining weight until 12–15 months.

There is also a newer way to estimate a dog's age. In 2020, researchers at UC San Diego compared DNA methylation in dogs and people and proposed the formula 16 × ln(dog age) + 31 (Wang et al. 2020). It was built from Labrador Retrievers, so it isn't specific to Frenchies, but for comparison it puts a 2-year-old at about 42.1, a 5-year-old at about 56.8 and a 10-year-old at about 67.8 — older than the AKC chart in early adulthood and close to it later.

Same age, different breeds

Human years tell you how grown-up a dog is; the share of a typical lifespan tells you how far through life it is. At the same age, a French Bulldog is further along than most small breeds because its typical lifespan is shorter. The table uses AKC lifespan ranges and the AKC/AVMA chart for each breed's size group.

An 8-year-old French Bulldog compared with other breeds of the same age
Breed (8 years old)Human yearsTypical lifespan (AKC)Share of typical life used
French Bulldog4810–12 years73%
Pug4813–15 years57%
Boston Terrier4811–13 years67%
Chihuahua4815–17 years50%
Bulldog518–10 years89%

So an 8-year-old Frenchie and an 8-year-old Chihuahua are the same "human" age on the chart, but the Frenchie has used about 73% of a typical life and the Chihuahua about half. That is why the senior stage, and twice-yearly check-ups, start earlier for French Bulldogs.

French Bulldog puppy growth by age

Switch the calculator to Puppy growth stage to check where a young Frenchie is. The table is a short French Bulldog growth chart by age. It combines the AKC's growth chart (the share of adult weight that small and medium puppies reach at each age) with the average adult weight of UK French Bulldogs, 11.5 kg for females and 13.7 kg for males (O'Neill 2018). Treat it as a typical range, never as a target weight.

We don't show weights before 6 months because the AKC chart starts there and we found no reliable French Bulldog figures for younger puppies — litters and lines vary a lot. Weigh a young puppy every week or two and ask your vet whether the trend looks right. For how much to feed at each age, see the French Bulldog feeding chart.

When is a French Bulldog full grown? Small breeds usually stop growing taller by 6–8 months, while medium dogs reach adult size at about 12 months (AKC). Most Frenchies are close to adult height by 8 months and finish filling out between 12 and 15 months. The AKC breed standard caps adult French Bulldogs at 28 lb.

When is a French Bulldog considered a senior?

The 2019 AAHA Canine Life Stage Guidelines define the senior stage as the last 25% of a dog's expected life. For a French Bulldog expected to live 10–12 years, that starts at about 8.3 years, or roughly 49 in human years. That is earlier than many owners expect from a small dog, and it is a good moment to change a few routines.

  • Book check-ups about every six months and ask about senior blood tests.
  • Watch for slower walks, stiffness after rest, heavier breathing, coughing, weight change or lumps.
  • Keep weight in check — older dogs move less, and extra weight is harder on a flat-faced dog's breathing.
  • Use ramps or lift your dog on and off sofas to protect the back.

Many Frenchies stay playful well into their senior years. "Senior" is a prompt for closer care, not a countdown. For how long Frenchies live and why, see our French Bulldog lifespan guide.

How this French Bulldog age calculator works

  1. Birth date or age: a birth date is turned into an exact age (it can't be in the future or more than 20 years ago). Otherwise the years and months you enter are used.
  2. Human years: the AKC/AVMA small-dog chart — 15 at 1, 24 at 2, then about 4 a year — with vet puppy milestones before age 1. It is the same calculation as our small dog age calculator, so both give the same number for the same age.
  3. Life stage: AAHA stages with the French Bulldog's 10–12 year AKC range (puppy until 9 months, young adult to 3½, mature adult, then senior from about 8.3).
  4. Next birthday: the human-years age at your Frenchie's next whole birthday.
  5. Puppy growth mode: converts weeks or months to a growth stage and, from 6 months, a typical weight range from the AKC chart.

A birth date gives the most precise answer, because a dog that is 3 years and 10 months old is closer to 4 than to 3 — on the small-dog chart that is about 31.3 human years, not 28. If you only know the year of birth, the age fields with a best-guess month are close enough. Use the Copy result button to share the answer with family.

Rescue Frenchies often arrive without papers. In that case your vet can estimate age from the teeth, eyes and coat, and you can enter that estimate here; our puppy age by teeth guide explains what vets look for in younger dogs.

Frequently asked questions

How old is my French Bulldog in human years?

Use the calculator above. As a guide, a 1-year-old Frenchie is about 15 in human years, a 2-year-old about 24, a 5-year-old about 36 and a 10-year-old about 56.

How do you convert Frenchie years to human years?

Count 15 human years for the first year, 9 for the second, then about 4 for every year after that. That is the AKC/AVMA chart for small dogs.

How old is a 3 year old French Bulldog in human years?

About 28 human years — a young adult.

How old is a 7 year old French Bulldog in human years?

About 44 human years, in the mature adult stage and close to senior.

How old is a 12 year old French Bulldog in human years?

About 64 human years, at the top of the breed's typical 10–12 year range.

Is there a Frenchie age calculator that uses a birth date?

Yes — this one. Enter the birth date and it works out the exact age, the human-years equivalent and your dog's next birthday in human years.

Is 1 dog year 7 human years for a French Bulldog?

No. A 1-year-old Frenchie is about 15 in human years, not 7, and after age 2 each year adds about 4 human years, not 7.

When is a French Bulldog full grown?

Most reach adult height by about 8 months and full adult weight between 12 and 15 months (AKC growth chart).

How big should a 6 month old French Bulldog be?

Typically about 66–75% of adult weight, which for UK averages is about 7.6–10.3 kg. It is a range, not a target — your vet will judge body condition.

When is a French Bulldog a senior?

At about 8.3 years, the last quarter of a typical 10–12 year life (AAHA).

Why does the French Bulldog age chart use the small-dog column?

PetYearsCalc classes the French Bulldog as a small breed on every page, so the answers match. Heavier Frenchies sit between the small and medium columns, which differ by about 4 human years at age 10.

Human-years ages are a way to picture your dog's life stage, not a medical measurement. Your vet is the best judge of how your Frenchie is ageing.
