Betta fish usually live 3–5 years with good care (PetMD; Unusual Pet Vets) — some are reported to reach about 10. The keys are a heater (76–81 °F), a filtered tank of 2.5 gallons or more and weekly 15–25% water changes. Store bettas are often 6–12 months old when bought, so count that time too.
General information only. Vets publish few betta figures, so we combine vet, university, database and peer-reviewed sources and say which is which; pet-care sites are used only to fill gaps. For a sick or injured betta, see an aquatic (fish) vet. We give no medication advice.
Betta fish lifespan: how long do betta fish live?
The usual betta fish lifespan is three to five years. Two vet-written PetMD articles give that range, and so does Unusual Pet Vets, a group of exotic-animal clinics: "Betta fish can live 3-5 years when kept in good conditions." PetMD adds that "some have been known to live up to 10 years with excellent care", while Chewy's vet-reviewed guide puts the average with excellent care at 5–7 years. So how long do betta fish live in an ordinary home? Usually three to five years, sometimes more, often less when the tank is cold or dirty.
Our calculator uses 4 years, the middle of the vet range, as the average. That gives a simple rule of thumb: a 1-year-old betta has used about 25% of a typical life, a 2-year-old about 50% and a 3-year-old about 75%.
| Setting | Lifespan | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Good home aquarium | 3–5 years | PetMD (two vet-written articles); Unusual Pet Vets |
| Excellent care | 5–7 years | Chewy (vet-reviewed) gives 5–7 as an average with excellent care |
| Longest reported | Up to 10 years | PetMD — reported, no named fish |
| Scientific databases | Maximum 2 years | AnAge and FishBase, from older literature |
| In the wild | Not measured | No field study follows wild bettas for life |
The average betta lifespan — or average betta fish lifespan, as it is often searched — also hides a starting delay. You rarely bring a betta home on the day it hatched: the fish has already lived through months on a farm, a flight and a shop shelf. That's why the betta fish life expectancy you see at home can feel shorter than the numbers above — part of the clock ran before you met it.
People word this question in many ways: "how long can a betta fish live", "how long can a betta live", "how long will a betta fish live", "how old can a betta fish live" or "how old do betta fish live". Some ask "how many years can a betta fish live", "how many years does a betta fish live" or, more loosely, "how many years do a betta fish live". Others type "how long do betta live", "how long do a betta fish live", "how long do a betta fish live for", "how long does a betta fish live for" or "how long can betta fish live for", and some ask "how long is the betta fish life span" or simply "how long is betta fish life span". Quick typists write "how long to betta fish live", "betta fish live how long", "betta fish how long do they live" and "for how long do betta fish live". All of them have the same answer: three to five years with proper care, with rare fish reaching around ten.
How long do betta fish live in captivity and in the wild?
How long do betta fish live in captivity? In a heated, filtered home tank, the vet range of 3–5 years applies. The scientific databases are more cautious: AnAge, the ageing database run by the Human Ageing Genomic Resources project, lists a maximum longevity of just 2 years, and FishBase gives a "max. reported age" of 2.00 years. Animal Diversity Web repeats AnAge's figure as an average for captive fish. These entries come from older aquarium literature, before heaters and good filters were normal, and many modern pets beat them.
How long do betta fish live in a tank?
The betta fish lifespan in tank conditions depends mostly on how the tank is run. PetMD's care sheet sets a minimum of 2.5 gallons and calls 10 gallons or more ideal, because bigger tanks swing less in temperature and chemistry. A 2024 study in Animal Welfare rotated 13 males through tanks from a 1.5-litre jar to a 19.3-litre planted tank: the fish were more active and showed fewer abnormal behaviours, such as hovering and repetitive swimming, in the large furnished tank. So how long do betta fish live in a tank? Longest in a warm, stable, well-kept one, whatever its exact size.
UF/IFAS, the University of Florida's extension service, takes a slightly different view: it notes that water quality "is not dependent on the size of the container, but rather on management and husbandry", and that bettas evolved for small, shallow water. Both views agree on the part that matters — frequent partial changes and stable warmth.
How long do betta fish live in the wild?
How long do betta fish live in the wild? Nobody has measured it. Wild Betta splendens live in rice paddies, shallow ponds, canals and even puddles in the Mekong basin (UF/IFAS; FishBase), and many of those habitats shrink in the dry season. Animal Diversity Web notes that most bettas can bury themselves in the bottom of a dried-up habitat. Chewy points out that wild fish also face predators a home tank never has. Wild bettas are dull brown or green, not the bright show fish sold in shops, and IUCN lists the species as Vulnerable (FishBase, assessment 2011).
What affects betta life expectancy?
Betta life expectancy comes down to a handful of factors. Chewy's guide sums them up as "suitability of the environment, adequacy of the diet, and protection against disease", plus genetics and luck. Here's what each means in practice:
- Warmth: bettas are tropical and "do not do well in cold water" (UF/IFAS). PetMD's target is 76–81 °F (24–27 °C) with a heater and thermometer, even in a warm house, because swings are stressful.
- Clean, stable chemistry: PetMD advises weekly tests for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH. A 2023 lab study found bettas unusually tolerant of ammonia, probably because they shift to breathing air — but tolerance isn't the same as health.
- Calm flow: UF/IFAS cites research using water flow as a stressor and warns that heavy filtration "may actually be harmful". A sponge or adjustable low-flow filter suits them.
- Diet: betta pellets once or twice a day, with occasional frozen or live treats (PetMD). Overfeeding is common; Unusual Pet Vets say the food should be eaten within about 5 minutes.
- Space and cover: a lid, plants and hiding places. The 2024 welfare study found barren tanks, even large ones, led to more abnormal behaviour.
- Genetics: Chewy notes that decades of selective breeding for colour and fins may bring inbreeding problems that shorten some fishes' lives.
Most of these come down to one thing: betta fish longevity is decided by the water. Unusual Pet Vets list the warning signs of trouble — loss of bright colour, thin or uneven fins, weight loss and not eating — and recommend a fish health check every 6–12 months.
Betta fish life stages and age
The betta fish age span runs from a tiny egg in a bubble nest to an older adult of three years or more. The timings below come from Animal Diversity Web and UF/IFAS; the "older adult" line is our own marker for the start of the typical 3–5 year range, not a vet definition.
| Stage | Age | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Egg | 1–2 days | Eggs hatch 24–48 hours after spawning (ADW) |
| Fry | Hatch to about 3 months | Free-swimming after the yolk sac is used up, about 3 days after hatching (UF/IFAS); little colour yet |
| Juvenile | About 3–5 months | Colour and fins develop; sexes are easy to tell apart (ADW) |
| Adult | About 5 months to 3 years | Sexually mature at around 5 months (ADW); most bettas are sold as young adults |
| Older adult | 3 years + | The start of the typical 3–5 year range; slower, often duller |
Because bettas are sold as young adults, most owners only ever see the last two stages. Our betta age chart goes through each stage in detail and estimates age from your fish's looks.
How to help a betta live longer
Nothing guarantees a long betta fish lifetime, but each target below removes a known cause of early death. Tick the ones you already meet in the calculator's care checklist to get a score out of five.
| Setting | Target | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature | 76–81 °F (24–27 °C), with a heater | PetMD; FishBase gives 24–30 °C for the species; Unusual Pet Vets about 26 °C |
| Tank | At least 2.5 gal (about 10 L); 10 gal ideal | PetMD; Unusual Pet Vets 15–20 L; a 2024 study recommends more than 5.6 L at home |
| Filter | Gentle, low or adjustable flow | PetMD; UF/IFAS (strong flow is a stressor) |
| Water changes | 15–25% every week | PetMD; Unusual Pet Vets 25% weekly |
| Diet | Betta pellets once or twice a day | PetMD; Unusual Pet Vets (eaten within 5 minutes) |
| Lid | Always | PetMD: "bettas can jump" |
| Vet check | Every 6–12 months | Unusual Pet Vets |
Start with heat and cleanliness. A heater and a weekly partial change fix the two problems vets see most; PetMD's first step for an unwell betta is to check water quality and temperature. Then add space, gentle filtration and a varied but small diet. Keep males on their own — PetMD says they "should never be housed together".
Siamese fighting fish, fighter fish and other names
The betta has many names, and they all describe Betta splendens, so the betta splendens lifespan is the same whichever you use. How long do Siamese fighting fish live? Three to five years in good care — the lifespan of a Siamese fighting fish is the betta lifespan. The name comes from Thailand (once Siam), where males were bred to fight; PetMD notes that the King of Siam regulated the fights. Shortened, people ask "how long do Siamese fish live".
The same goes for the Chinese fighting fish lifespan, a name used in some places, and for "fighter fish". How long do fighter fish live? The same 3–5 years, so the fighter fish life span and fighter fish life expectancy match the figures above. Whether you ask "how long does a fighter fish live", "how long can a fighting fish live" or "how long does a fighting fish live", one species answers. The common misspelling gives "beta life span", and you'll also see "betta life span" and "betta lifespan" written both ways.
Other Betta species exist — UF/IFAS counts over 73 — but almost none is sold as an everyday pet, and none has published lifespan data we could find.
How this betta lifespan calculator works
Enter your betta's age in years and months. The calculator compares it with the vet range of 3–5 years and its middle, 4, and shows the life stage and a timeline. Past 5 years it says your fish is beyond the typical range; past 7 it calls it a veteran; past 10 it points out that it's older than any betta we found reported. The care checklist never changes the numbers — it gives a score out of five and lists what to fix first.
The same engine runs our male vs female betta calculator, so both pages give identical results for the same age.
Frequently asked questions
How long do betta fish live?
Usually 3–5 years with proper care (PetMD; Unusual Pet Vets). Some have reportedly lived up to 10 years (PetMD), while cold or dirty tanks cut lives much shorter.
What is the average lifespan for a betta fish?
About 4 years — the middle of the vet range of 3–5 years. Chewy's vet-reviewed guide gives 5–7 years as the average with excellent care.
How long do betta fish usually live in a home tank?
Three to five years in a heated, filtered tank of 2.5 gallons or more with weekly partial changes (PetMD). Unheated bowls usually mean a shorter life.
How long do betta fish last after you buy them?
Often two to four years, because store bettas are usually already 6–12 months old (Chewy). Count that time when you work out how old yours is.
How long does a betta fish last in a bowl?
No study measures it. PetMD says bettas should not be kept in bowls, and UF/IFAS says an unheated container needs a room of at least 22 °C (71.6 °F) and frequent changes.
What is the average life of betta fish in the wild?
Unknown — no field study has followed wild bettas. Databases list a 2-year maximum (AnAge; FishBase), but those figures come from older captive records.
How long do Siamese fighting fish live?
The same as any betta — they're one species, Betta splendens. Expect 3–5 years with good care.
Is 3 years old for a betta?
It's the start of the typical range. A 3-year-old betta has used about 75% of a 4-year average lifespan, so it counts as an older adult.
Can a betta fish live 10 years?
Very rarely. PetMD says some have lived up to 10 years with excellent care, but we found no documented fish. See our oldest betta fish page.
What kills bettas young?
Mostly the water: cold, ammonia and nitrite build-up, strong flow and overfeeding. PetMD's first step for an unwell betta is to check water quality and temperature.
Does tank size change betta fish lifespan?
Indirectly. Larger tanks stay more stable (PetMD), and a 2024 study found bettas more active with fewer abnormal behaviours in a large planted tank. No study has measured lifespan by tank size.
Lifespan figures are estimates for planning, not a forecast for your fish. Genetics and its life before you got it matter too. If your betta stops eating, clamps its fins or loses colour quickly, ask an aquatic (fish) vet.
