Adults: 100–200 days (UF/IFAS); females about 200 days, males less (Virginia Tech); females 20–30 weeks (Penn State). Egg to adult: about 2.4–3 months at 24 °C. Total: about 5.6–9.9 months. Longest: up to about 10 months as an adult (Truman 1961).
German cockroach lifespan
The german cockroach lifespan is short by cockroach standards: an adult lives about 100 to 210 days, after roughly two to four months as an egg and a nymph. UF/IFAS gives 100–200 days for adults, Penn State 20–30 weeks for adult females, and Virginia Tech says "Female roaches live about 200 days and males not as long". Ebeling's review puts the average at about 200 days at room temperature, with some individuals living as long as 10 months (Truman 1961).
Add development and the whole german roach lifespan at a typical 24 °C (75.2 °F) is about 7–9.9 months for a female and 5.6–9.6 months for a male, counting from the day her egg case formed.
- Egg case: about 28 days at room temperature, carried by the mother the whole time (Gould & Deay 1940; Penn State).
- Nymphs: 41 days at 25 °C, usually five or six moults (Peterson et al. 2023).
- Adult: 100–200 days (UF/IFAS); females 140–210 days (Penn State).
The lifespan of a german roach matters less than its output: in that time a female produces four to eight egg cases of 30–40 eggs each (UF/IFAS). That's why a short-lived insect causes such long-lasting infestations.
How long do German cockroaches live: males vs females
How long do German cockroaches live depends on sex. Females live longer: about 200 days as adults (Virginia Tech; Ebeling), or 20–30 weeks (Penn State). Males live "not as long" (Virginia Tech); the calculator uses UF/IFAS's 100–200 days for them, the published range for adults in general. That gives this german cockroach lifespan male vs female comparison:
| Sex | Adult lifespan | Total from egg at 24 °C | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Female | 4.6–6.9 months | 7–9.9 months | Penn State; Virginia Tech |
| Male | 3.3–6.6 months | 5.6–9.6 months | UF/IFAS (adults); Virginia Tech (males shorter) |
| Not sure | 3.3–6.9 months | 5.6–9.9 months | Combined |
Females do the heavy lifting. Each one forms her first egg case about 11–12 days after becoming an adult (Ross 1929, quoted by Ebeling), carries it until hatching, and starts the next within a couple of weeks — about one every six weeks at room temperature (Penn State). Telling them apart is easy when a female is carrying her light brown, purse-shaped egg case; males are slimmer with a narrower, tapering abdomen.
How long do German roaches live as nymphs?
How long do German roaches live before they can breed? As nymphs, from about a month to three months. Nymphs are dark brown to black with two dark stripes and no wings (UF/IFAS). In the 2023 Auburn study they took 31 days at 30 °C and 87 days at 20 °C, with five or six moults (Peterson et al. 2023). So how long do german cockroach nymphs live is mainly a question of how warm the room is. The calculator's "Nymph" option gives the remaining lifespan of a nymph of unknown age: from the adult range (if it's about to moult) up to a whole nymph stage plus adulthood.
German roach lifespan at different temperatures
Warmth speeds up growing up, which shortens the total life slightly and, more importantly, shortens the time between generations. Texas A&M puts the German cockroach's optimum at around 80 °F (27 °C). The table uses the shared model: egg case from Gould & Deay (1940) and Ross (1929), nymphs from Peterson et al. (2023), adults from Penn State and UF/IFAS.
| Temperature | Egg case | Nymphs: mean (range) | Female: total from egg | Male: total from egg |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20 °C (68 °F) | 28 days * | 87 days (71–119 days) | 7.9–11.7 months | 6.5–11.4 months |
| 22 °C (71.6 °F) | 28 days * | 69 days (57–92 days) | 7.4–10.8 months | 6.1–10.5 months |
| 25 °C (77 °F) | 27 days | 41 days (37–51 days) | 6.7–9.5 months | 5.4–9.1 months |
| 27 °C (80.6 °F) | 25 days | 37 days (33–50 days) | 6.5–9.4 months | 5.2–9 months |
| 30 °C (86 °F) | 21 days | 31 days (28–49 days) | 6.2–9.2 months | 4.9–8.9 months |
| 32 °C (89.6 °F) | 18 days | 32 days (28–45 days) | 6.1–9 months | 4.8–8.7 months |
| 35 °C (95 °F) | 14 days | 34 days (28–40 days) | 6–8.7 months | 4.7–8.4 months |
* Egg-case times below 24.4 °C weren't measured; the room-temperature figure (about 28 days) is used. Below 20 °C the calculator won't estimate: at 15 °C every nymph died in its first stage after about 43 days, and the lower development threshold is 14.1 °C (Peterson et al. 2023). Above 30 °C, nymphs slowed again and fewer survived — at 35 °C only 67% reached adulthood.
Adult life isn't adjusted for temperature in the table because no study we found measured German adult lifespan at different temperatures.
When food runs out
The german cockroach lifespan without food is far shorter. Newly emerged adult German females lived an average of 35.1 days with water but no food, and only 20.1 days with neither, at 27 °C (Willis & Lewis 1957, quoted by Ebeling); Virginia Tech's rule of thumb is two weeks without food or water and a month with water. Compare that with 82 days for well-fed females in the same tests. The cockroach without food and water timer turns those figures into dates.
German cockroach lifespan compared with other species
The German cockroach is the smallest and shortest-lived of the five common pest species — and the one most likely to be living in a kitchen. Adult ranges are for both sexes; totals at 24 °C.
| Species | Adult lifespan | Total from egg | Egg cases per female |
|---|---|---|---|
| German cockroach | 3.3–6.9 months | 5.6–9.9 months | 4–8 egg cases of 30–40 eggs |
| American cockroach | 3–23.2 months (up to 1.9 years) | 10.1–57 months (up to 4.7 years) | 9–10 egg cases of 14–16 eggs |
| Oriental cockroach | 1.1–5.9 months | 20.2–26 months (up to 2.2 years) | about 8 egg cases of 16 eggs |
| Brown-banded cockroach | 3–10.3 months | 11–18.4 months (up to 1.5 years) | about 14 egg cases of 13–18 eggs |
| Smokybrown cockroach | 3–9 months | 22.7–28.7 months (up to 2.4 years) | about 10 egg cases of about 20 eggs |
The bigger species live longer but breed far more slowly: an American female produces egg cases of only 14–16 eggs (UF/IFAS), and its young take about 600 days to mature. For all five species side by side, with a comparison chart, see the cockroach lifespan calculator.
How this calculator works
This page uses exactly the same engine and data as the general cockroach lifespan calculator with the species fixed to German, so the two always give identical results.
- Egg case: about 28 days at room temperature (Gould & Deay 1940, at 24.4 °C) and 14 days at 35 °C (Ross 1929), joined by a straight line; held at 28 days below 24.4 °C.
- Nymphs: Peterson, Hu & Appel (2023): means and ranges at 20, 25, 30 and 35 °C, interpolated between.
- Adults: females 140–210 days (Penn State's 20–30 weeks), males 100–200 days (UF/IFAS adults; Virginia Tech says males live less long), not adjusted for temperature.
- Accepted temperatures: 20–35 °C (68–95 °F). Colder rooms get an explanation instead of a number.
Frequently asked questions
How long do German cockroaches live?
Adults live about 100–200 days (UF/IFAS); females about 200 days and males not as long (Virginia Tech). Add 2–4 months as an egg and nymph for the whole life.
What is the German cockroach lifespan from egg to death?
About 7–9.9 months for a female at 24 °C and 5.6–9.6 months for a male, using our shared model.
How long do German roaches live as adults?
100–200 days on average (UF/IFAS), up to about 10 months for the longest-lived (Truman 1961, quoted by Ebeling).
Do female German cockroaches live longer than males?
Yes. Females live about 200 days and males not as long (Virginia Tech). Penn State gives 20–30 weeks for adult females.
How long do German cockroach nymphs live?
They stay nymphs for about 31 days at 30 °C to 87 days at 20 °C before becoming adults (Peterson et al. 2023).
Does a warm house make German cockroaches live longer?
No — warmth makes them grow up faster. Nymphs develop fastest around 30 °C; at 35 °C they slow again and fewer survive (Peterson et al. 2023).
How long can a German cockroach live without food?
About a month with water (Virginia Tech); newly emerged females averaged 35.1 days with water but no food and 20.1 days with nothing (Willis & Lewis 1957).
How many babies does a German cockroach have in its life?
Four to eight egg cases of 30–40 eggs each (UF/IFAS), usually 4 or 5 cases (Ebeling).
Is the German cockroach lifespan shorter than other roaches?
Yes. It is the shortest of the five common pest species; American cockroaches can live two to three years.
