Quick answer

A Rottweiler is about 15 in human years at 1, 24 at 2 and 45 at 6 (AKC/AVMA large-dog chart), and a senior from about 7.1. Puppies weigh about 25.9–30.6 kg (males) and 21.8–27.2 kg (females) at 6 months and reach adult size at 18–24 months (AKC).

General information only. Weights here are typical ranges, not targets, and human years are an approximation. For growth or health worries, talk to your vet.

Rottweiler age chart: Rottweiler years to human years

This Rottweiler age chart converts each birthday into human years using the AKC/AVMA chart for large dogs, the same one our other dog calculators use. A Rottweiler races through childhood: about 15 in human terms at its first birthday and 24 at its second. After that the clock slows to roughly five or six human years per year, faster than a small dog but slower than a giant breed.

A few rows worth remembering: a 3-year-old Rottweiler is about 28, a 6-year-old about 45 and a 9-year-old about 61. That last figure helps explain why nine is a milestone in this breed. The stages follow AAHA guidance, which counts the last quarter of a breed's expected life as senior, so with the AKC's 9–10 year range a Rottweiler is a senior from about 7.1.

For puppies, the first year is not split evenly. Development is fastest in the first months, so a 6-month-old is already about 10 in human years:

4 months6Puppy
6 months10Puppy
9 months12.8Puppy

Why not just multiply by seven? The "×7" rule would make a 1-year-old Rottweiler 7 — a child — when in fact it is sexually mature and nearly adult size, closer to a mid-teen. It would also make a 12-year-old 84, close to the large-dog chart's 77, so the old rule is wrong at the start and only roughly right later on. Use the calculator above for an exact age, or add a birth date for today's figure and the human age at the next birthday.

Rottweiler age chart by growth stage

Age in human years tells only half the story. The other half is what a Rottweiler's body is doing at each stage, which matters for food, exercise and what to watch for:

Rottweiler age chart by growth stage: newborn to senior, with human years
StageAgeWhat is happeningHuman years
Newborn and nursingBirth to about 1 monthFully dependent on the mother; no weight chart applies—
Young puppy1 to 6 monthsFastest gains; males and females already differ by a few kilos0–10
Adolescent6 to 18 monthsGrowth slows from 50–60% to 100% of adult weight on the AKC chart10–19.5
Young adult15 months to 3½ yearsHeight complete; muscle and chest keep filling out to about 217.3–30
Mature adult3½ to 7.1 yearsPrime years; weight gain and joint wear start to show30–50.6
SeniorFrom about 7.1 yearsLast quarter of a 9–10 year life; twice-yearly check-ups50.6 and up

The adolescent stage deserves special care. The AKC's chief veterinarian advises against road work or jogging before 14 to 18 months for large breeds, until the growth plates have closed, and recommends short walks on softer ground instead. Rottweilers also look adult long before they are finished: many owners are surprised that a dog with an adult's height at a year old keeps filling out through its second year.

Rottweiler weight chart by age

This Rottweiler weight chart shows typical Rottweiler weight by age for males and females, in kilograms and pounds, from 1 month to adulthood. From 6 months it applies the AKC's puppy growth chart to the AKC adult weights of 95–135 lb for males and 80–100 lb for females. Females use the AKC "large" curve (60% of adult size at 6 months, 75% at 9, 85% at 12, 95% at 15). Males use the same curve for the light end of the range but the "X-large" curve (50%, 65%, 80%, 90%) for the heavy end, because the male range crosses the 100 lb line where the AKC switches curves.

Before 6 months the AKC gives no percentages, and we found no study or kennel-club chart of young Rottweiler puppy weights. The 1–5 month ranges come from a pet-care site (Pawlicy) and are labelled as such; a second pet site's female chart (Hepper) gives almost the same figures, but treat them loosely — puppies of the same litter can differ a lot.

Rottweiler puppy weight chart by week

Breeders and new owners often weigh young puppies by the week. Here is the same Rottweiler puppy weight chart in weeks, with months between the listed points filled in on a straight line:

The steepest part of the curve is between 2 and 4 months, when a puppy can roughly triple its weight. A single reading means little; a steady upward line over several weeks means a lot more. Food for those months is covered on our Rottweiler feeding chart by age.

When is a Rottweiler full grown?

A Rottweiler reaches 100% of adult size on the AKC chart at 18 months, but the AKC adds that large and giant breeds may keep developing until 18 to 24 months. So when is a Rottweiler full grown? Height is usually in place by about a year to 18 months; weight and muscle keep coming until about 2. Males, as the bigger sex, tend to finish later than females.

  • 6 months: about 25.9–30.6 kg for a male and 21.8–27.2 kg for a female — half to 60% of adult weight.
  • 12 months: about 36.6–49 kg for a male; most height is there, but the frame still looks narrow.
  • 18–24 months: adult weight; chest and head broaden. Gains after 2 years are more likely fat than frame.

PetMD suggests feeding a puppy diet until about 12 months; the AKC says puppy formulas are typically fed until 11 to 14 months, so ask your vet when to switch.

How big will my Rottweiler get?

The quick answer is the AKC adult range for your dog's sex: males 95–135 lb (43–61 kg) and 24–27 inches; females 80–100 lb (36–45 kg) and 22–25 inches. Pet Rottweilers in UK vet records were a little lighter, with median adult weights of 48.5 kg for males and 41.5 kg for females, and only about 1 in 10 males weighed 60 kg or more (O'Neill 2017).

To estimate your own puppy's adult weight, you can run the AKC percentages backwards — for a male, divide the weight at 6 months by about 0.55, at 9 months by 0.7 and at 12 months by 0.83 (between the AKC large and X-large figures); for a female, by 0.6, 0.75 and 0.85 — but the parents' size is a better guide than any chart. Ask the breeder what the mother and father weigh. Male vs female size is compared in more detail on our male vs female Rottweiler page.

Is my Rottweiler the right weight?

A number on the scale shows where your dog sits on the chart; body condition shows whether that weight is healthy. Two dogs of the same weight can be lean and overweight, depending on frame. Use your eyes and hands:

  • About right: run your flat hand along the side and each rib is easy to count; from above the body narrows behind the ribcage, and from the side the belly rises towards the hind legs.
  • Underweight: the hip bones, backbone and ribs stand out even at a glance, and the thigh and shoulder muscles look thin.
  • Overweight: the ribs are hidden under a padding you must push through, the back looks broad and flat, and a roll of fat forms where the tail meets the body.

Weight gain is common in the breed: 7.1% of UK Rottweilers were recorded as overweight or obese in a single year (O'Neill 2017), and AKC's chief veterinarian warns that obesity in puppies "can lead to a predisposition of future orthopedic issues later in life", preferring "a fit, leaner puppy". If your Rottweiler is outside the typical range, losing weight, or you aren't sure how to judge body condition, ask your vet to show you — and talk to your vet before making big changes to food.

How this age chart calculator works

  1. Age in human years: the AKC/AVMA large-dog chart (15 at 1 year, 24 at 2, then about 5–6 per year), with puppy months from veterinary development milestones. Enter a birth date (not in the future) or an age up to 18 years; the result also shows the human age at the next birthday. The numbers match our dog age calculator by breed exactly.
  2. Life stage: AAHA boundaries with the AKC's 9–10 year range — puppy to 15 months, senior from about 7.1.
  3. Growth checker: enter age in weeks or months (up to 36 months), sex and, optionally, weight in kg or lb. You get the typical range for that age from the table above, whether your dog is below, within or above it, the adult range and when adult size is reached. Weeks are converted at 4.35 per month.
  4. Limits: weights from 0.3 to 100 kg are accepted; anything outside is treated as a typing or unit mistake.

The same weight table feeds our feeding chart, so both pages always agree on what a typical Rottweiler weighs at each age.

Frequently asked questions

How old is a Rottweiler in human years?

About 15 at 1 year, 24 at 2, 36 at 5 and 66 at 10, using the AKC/AVMA large-dog chart.

How old is a 3-year-old Rottweiler in human years?

About 28 — a young adult.

How old is a 9-year-old Rottweiler in human years?

About 61, and a senior on the AAHA-based stages.

How much should a Rottweiler weigh at 6 months?

Typically 25.9–30.6 kg for a male and 21.8–27.2 kg for a female — about half to 60% of adult weight (AKC chart).

How much should a Rottweiler puppy weigh at 8 weeks?

Roughly 4.9–6.7 kg for males and 4–5.8 kg for females, based on pet-site ranges — treat these loosely.

When is a Rottweiler full grown?

At about 18 months on the AKC chart, with muscle and chest still filling out until about 2 years.

How big will my Rottweiler get?

Males usually reach 95–135 lb (43–61 kg) and 24–27 inches; females 80–100 lb (36–45 kg) and 22–25 inches (AKC).

How much does an adult Rottweiler weigh in the UK?

Pet Rottweilers in UK vet records had median adult weights of 48.5 kg (males) and 41.5 kg (females) (O'Neill 2017).

Is my Rottweiler puppy overweight?

If you have to press to feel the ribs and there is no waist, probably. Ask your vet before cutting food — growing joints need steady, not rapid, growth.

Is there a Rottweiler age calculator for birth dates?

Yes — the calculator above accepts a birth date and gives today's age in human years and the human age at the next birthday.

Why does the weight chart change source at 6 months?

The AKC growth chart starts at 6 months. For younger puppies we found only pet-site ranges, so those months are labelled as such.

Human years are an approximation and puppy weights vary widely between healthy dogs. If your Rottweiler's growth or weight worries you, your veterinarian can check it properly.
